The Yakima DoubleDown 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack is most likely the first and last bike rack I will ever own. When the box arrived at my door, it was stamped with Yakima's "Love it till you leave it" guarantee. Right out of the box, it was simple to assemble with easy to follow directions in both English and Spanish - and as I found out later, you can also download the assembly instructions via PDF document (in case they are misplaced) on Yakima's Web site. The tongue adapter allows you to connect the bike rack to a 2 inch receiver/hitch, but since I have a smaller, 1.25 inch mount, all I had to do was remove one screw to slide off the hard-shell outer casing. From assembly to mounting, it took me just over 20 minutes to get it all done. The best part, when bikes aren't attached, is that I can release a locking pin to access the rear hatchback door of my Ford Escape SUV. Also, the supportive upper arm folds down when the rack is not in use.

The only reason I did not give this product the full five star rating is because although the unit is secure, it's just a little top heavy when it is attached to the vehicle but not carrying any bikes. Finally, the DoubleDown 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack is meant to support two bikes at a time - more realistically at all times. With two bikes on the rack, it prevents excess sway of the front handlebars and bike tires. Since I only have my bike to support, I have fixed this problem by purchasing a couple of nylon elastic stretch bands to help prevent this swaying motion. This has worked well. With two bikes on the rack, however, I don't believe I would have this issue.

To end on a positive note, as long as you have it mounted correctly and tightly, the rack with bike(s) attached handles well at highway speeds in excess of 70MPH. Overall this is a great product that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fairly priced hitch mount that is built to last.

I bought this hitch mounted bike rack to fit a medium frame mountain bike and an extra small frame mountain bike. Overall it feels like a solid built rack, however it seems quite small for two bikes. When my 2 bikes are mounted, I have to fiddle around with them to get both of them to fit. I did manage to get both on, but peddles are touching and handle bars through the the other bikes spokes. I tried and there really is no other way for me to mount these bikes.

If I had to do it over again, I would buy the 3 or 4 bike rack, just for the extra room. Also, I bought a master brand hitch locking pin, that does not work with this rack because the hole is threaded. I assume you have to buy the Yakima branded lock with is $15 more than I paid.

This is a solid built hitch mounted rack, I just wish I bought a bigger sized one for the extra room as 2 bikes are really tight on this rack. Check out the Saris Thelma before you buy this one, wish I had.

This is well built bike rack and you will be pleased should you purchase one. There are only a few issues that you should be aware of:
1. The entire rack and can be stolen off your vehicle in minutes if the "thief" has a pair of pliers or a crescent wrench.
2. Individual bikes can be stolen off the rack in seconds.

The Yakima lockset is inadequate so I recommend the following: Drill two holes through the main post. Chain lock the rack to your hitch and chain lock the bikes to the post.

Happy riding.

I put a rear hitch on my Honda civic 2003 so my situation might not apply to everyone. These are well made racks, easy to install and take off. One screw bolt fastens the hitch to the rack to the hitch pretty easily. You can buy a lock for the screw bolt to prevent someone from taking your rack. There is a another screw that attaches the upright arm to the shorter arm that attaches to the hitch. That screw is not secured so someone could unscrew that and abscond with part of the hitch.

My biggest issues are
1) it extends to far backwards and catches often on angled pavement
2) the rubber break after a few months.
3) the plastic holders slide backwards and don't stay in place with extended use.

So 1) is mainly due to the hitch on the Civic being so low to the ground compared to SUVs. This rack wasn't meant to be placed on the back of a sedan. I have to be careful going up or down moderately angled driveways entering parking lots etc. The back end will scrape the pavement.

2 and 3) The least sturdy aspects of the rack are the plastic holders and the rubber straps that attach the bike to the rack. The straps will break after a few months and will need to be replaced. The plastic holders will get slightly bent from the force of the wind on the bike if you travel often on freeways like I do. I commute with my bike on the back of the Civic often. The plastic holders will often slide a bit backwards. I'm not worried about the bike falling off since they only slide about a couple inches max. But I feel the need to attach a couple bungie cords to keep a secondary attaching system in case of rubber strap failure and a better sense of security.

Overall the rack is okay for my purposes but next time I would look for a rack with a better, sturdier holders for the bike.

Very well made and sturdy. The quick release fold down works GREAT! 2 things Yakima should redesign: First, give the customer the option of using their own locking hitch pin (only Yakima's will fit). Using the included non-locking pin (that is threaded) involves using a wrench and lots of turning--not exactly quick release but not secure either. Secondly, as others have pointed out, the pivot point consists of a long bolt and nut that can be defeated easily by a ne'er-do-well evil-doer. The locking pin/cable combination sold as an accessory for this rack will not secure your bikes against loss--the only effective way is to use a long cable that goes from the bikes to the hitch itself. Five stars for the durable construcion and functionality, minus one each for the two serious design flaws. Would I buy it again? Probably, unless I found another one as well built that addressed these two problems.
