The lock supports slide and lock in place to accommodate different bike types and have not had one come loose yet. The straps that go into the locks also fit well and are pretty easy to get in and out (unless you have a short persons bike). The rack is easy to put on and take off the hitch receiver and easy to lock. You can't go wrong with this bike rack!
As such I double & triple checked the thing each & every time I would put it on the subaru, tighten it in as best I could, repeatedly tweaking & tightening to remove as much play as possible, but the play was NEVER stopped where I felt I trusted it entirely.
soooo....Nothing like wondering "what the heck was that" as you're driving the Merritt Parkway, to look out the side view mirror watching your families 3 mountain bikes bouncing 30 feet in the air repeatedly then crashing back to earth, and then having to screech to a stop.
Of course just over a hill crest some 3/4 of a mile up road to run huffing back to the scene as the rest of traffic is navigating around the bike carcasses & a couple of other drivers try to clear the debris of the road as I am approaching.
Thankfully, no other cars got hit by the flying bikes or the skidding rack as it traveled a few hundred feet sliding up the highway.
Bikes were totals, rims, frames, derailuers, brakes, seat stems, handle bars, pretzeled or broken into pieces.
The rack, unusable, the toenail that is supposed to retain it into the receiver was smashed into the stem, irretrievable, it failed and the thing just vibrated out as we drove along.
The rack itself, is now scuffed up, plastic ends scuffed up pretty rough, bike supports, pretty wonky, very very tough to open, but I would never ever trust that design again.
Folks, if whatever rack you get does not have a through hole locking pin like the yakima, unlike EVERY OTHER HITCH ITEM DOES, return it, or plan to suffer the fate of your bikes.
I miss my Trek & getting new bikes for the family in the middle of a pandemic is near impossible, I curse at thee yakima!
