UPDATE on 1/15/2014:
This morning, I received the following response from Implus Corporation (Yaktrax is an Implus Corporation brand) to an email that I sent them asking whether or not Yaktrax are designed for use while shoveling driveways:
"Yaktrax are primarily designed to increase stability and decrease falls while walking and running on compact snow and ice. They are meant to be used on these surfaces, not roads that are cleared and therefore safer without the use of a traction device. We do not recommend them for use shoveling or otherwise clearing pavement, as this will result in rapid wear.

EDIT: I've upped the stars to five ... it turns out that the problem is with the shoe size. The "tightness" of the new design overstretched the rubber, and it snapped. I wear 11W shoes, and ordered Medium per the Yaktrax sizing chart. I called Yaktrax, and they suggested I needed a Large. I went to REI locally, and lo and behold, a Large fits me perfectly. Even better, Yaktrax told me to send in my broken pair and they'll send me a new pair in Large size.
When I send my broken pair to Yaktrax, I'm including a letter strongly suggesting they revise their size chart to take foot width into consideration.
One piece of advice: When wearing these, bring along a quart-sized Ziploc bag for storage. It's the tastest and easiest way to deal with them when you get to your destination and you have to take off slushy, muddy Yaktrax.
This used to be a fairly hazardous undertaking. In addition to the frozen snow and ice, my lawn has about a 10 degree slope down to the road. I used to wear my lug soled Ecco shoes, walk very slowly and carefully, and use a ski pole for balance. Now, with my Yaktrax Pros, I can walk on my icy driveway and traverse the paths on my frozen lawn with ease and in less than half the time it took before. The Yaktrax work even on the patches of smooth, sloped, hard ice.
Over the years I've had many friends who've fallen on the ice here in Northern New England, often with painful & long lasting consequences. In a small, but very good way, these Yaktrax changed my life. I no longer worry about making it out to my bird feeding areas, snow blowing, or doing other outdoor jobs around the house in Winter because I can walk outside very near normally.
Judging from some of the other commenters, these might not be robust enough for repeated long walks or runs,
but I have had no trouble using them for daily jobs around my property.
I do highly recommend that you put these on an old pair of shoes and leave them on for the winter season.
They can be difficult to put on and take off, but the tight fit helps insure that they stay on your shoes.
I liked them so much, I bought an extra pair to leave in the car in case of emergencies.
If you have older friends who live in cold climates and who must who must go outside in bad weather, I highly recommend you tell them about Yaktrax.
