A friend is enlisted to save an entrepreneur's kidnapped daughters life. The mobsters in question are Japanese Yakuza and thus he goes to Japan where old wounds still exist from the end of the second world war between him the woman he loves and her 'brother' as he carries out his mission. Unfortunately his friend and employer have other motives which muddy the waters as things come to a head.

This film is about Japanese gangsters called Yakuza. There are many Japanese films about Yakuza but not many American films with a star like Robert Mitchum. This film combines a very strong but moody story with good acting by all of the stars. It is a classic gangster film and also a classic Yakuza film.

The Yakuza in Japan occupy a special niche. They have their own code of honor and some even become famous. Unlike American gangs that try to stay invisible, some Yakuza gangs are well known and a few top leaders have even made TV appearances. This film has held up over the years and is still enjoyable today. Nice combination of a very solid story and excellent acting by both Japanese and American actors.

Modern crime noir with American and Japanese stars. When honorr and debt defined men. Moody, atmospheric, thoughtful.

This is a very interesting story that doesn't overplay the Japanese niche of the 1970s. The sword and gun play are realistic, the Bushido code is displayed accurately but is subtle, shown more than spoken of. This is one of my personal favorites and I couldn't be more pleased to own this title. Keep your over-the-top Neo-Japanese films like Rising Sun, I would much rather buy The Yakuza. Ya can't beat the cool of Ken Tanaka

This is a stellar restoration of this cult 1975 noir thriller probably one of Mitchum best later efforts. He pairs well with Tarakura Ken who was also in the later but inferior, "Black Rain", big Bob is supported by an excellent cast of Brian Keith, Richard Jordan and Herb Edelman. With a lush score by Dave Grusin and excellent Japanese cinematography, this one is a keeper.

The movie that inspired a semi-sequel in Ridley Scott's (underrated Black Rain), The Yakuza features great performances from all of its principles, especially Ken Takakura and the late, great Richard Jordan.
