Installation is very easy, just take the lid off the lock battery case, plug in the module and put the lid back. Adding it to Smartthings is almost as easy. It is suggested that this is done with the lock close to the router and then install the whole assembly to the door. That's what I did the first time around and it took about a second to pair. Unfortunately the lock itself developed a mechanical fault so was replaced a month later and in removing it from the door I misplaced the module so after a fruitless search ordered a new one. This was paired to the new lock while fitted to the door which is on a lower floor of the house and some way from the router. Still took about 0.5 seconds for Smartthings to find it and pair.
In use it's great. My wife and I can unlock the door with our phones before we get to it and we no longer need to go down three flights of stairs to let guests in. We have also added a Smartthings button which discreetly sits on the corner of the coffee table and a press on the button opens the door without having to open a phone app.
Unexpected Benefit. Within the Smartthnings Classic iPhone app there a Notification Screen that records all the actions from plugs, light, etc. This includes the lock. It shows when the lock has been opened and also if it has been done with a code it shows which code. I.e. every code is stored on the lock in a numbered location so when code number 3 is used that is recorded on the app together with the time. Note it is the code LOCATION number. For security it does not show the actual code so does not help potential thieves.
The advertising for the module also gives the impression that it works with Amazon Echo. This is partly correct. It is possible to give a LOCK command to Alexa but an UNLOCK command is blocked as being unsafe. This make sense as it would be possible for a thief to shout "Alexa unlock the door" through the letter flap. If a voice command is really wanted I have found a work around but I won't detail it here.
The bottom line is that if you have a Yale Keyless Lock and a mobile phone the purchase of this little item is a no brainer.
I read reviews as they help my buying decisions. If this helps you please click the "helpful" so I know I am not wasting my time. Thanks
UPDATE
I have seen many comments on high battery drain with this kit. When I installed it the SmartThings app showed battery at 90% and that has not changed. I guess the battery level reporting is working as other sensors in the system are showing changes.
Hard to leave a star rating, probably shouldn’t be offered for sale on Amazon Australia
