Controls and Connectivity:HS Series full-range models feature two response controls with settings that allow them to adapt to the surface acoustics of rooms of varying shape and size. ROOM CONTROL allows you to attenuate the unnatural, exaggerated low-end that can often occur when speakers are placed next to walls, while HIGH TRIM allows for more flexible control of high frequency response.

Sick Monitors, But Not Too Big To Anger The Neighbors

I have been using these monitors now for years to make music. I'm a professional entertainer and musician and use these monitors all the time to make music. Since I live in a small apartment, I find they are the perfect size, big enough, but not too big to annoy the neighbors when monitoring music. Overall, these monitors have a crisp sound and have never experienced problems with them in all the years I have owned them.

Quality Monitors, Kinda Crappy Stands

I don't really know how to accurately score this since the actual monitors themselves work flawlessly, but the speaker stands these came with are not that great in quality. Even after tightening it as much as I could it still felt very wobbly, and one of the stands would not accept either screw for the base (getting them welded later to fix this issue).

The HS5s are very solid, the main page for them has much more detail about how great these are. The 1/4 to XLR cables work as intended.

These speakers are perfect for small to medium size studios. They are very clean, powerful and accurate. I had a pair of near field monitors where the woofer resonated the cabinet creating artificial coloration to the sound. Not the case with these. The speakers are well isolated from their cabinets. The built in amplification is a perfect, distortion-free match for the speakers and they can deliver plenty of loud volume if you want it. They are rear vented for bass, so pay attention to the instructions regarding the attenuation switches on the back if you are placing them close to walls (especially corners) where low-mid bass frequencies can be reflected and distorted. Speaking of bass, the low frequency response on these is a not very deep 54Hz. It rolls off very quickly at the low end. By themselves, they are fine for monitoring vocals, electric guitars and most acoustic instruments. If you need deep bass, I would strongly recommend pairing them with the Yamaha HS8 Studio Subwoofer. Yamaha HS8 Studio Subwoofer I work primarily in electronic music and strong bass response is an absolute must for me. Together, they sound absolutely amazing, especially when I'm cranking out earthquake level bass from my analog synthesizers. Even when I'm doing that mixed with mid and high frequency sounds, there is no distortion or coloration throughout the entire frequency range. You're hearing exactly what you are supposed to be hearing. Hookup of this configuration is extremely easy. You will need a separate electric outlet for each speaker. I wish my regular home stereo speakers sounded this good! I purchased these as a bundle. The cables and stands are very high quality and quite a bonus considering you're paying for what the pair of speakers would normally cost alone.

Good second pair of monitors

I use Adam A7X and SUB8 but I needed something for A/B referencing while producing. These have a limited frequency response and a pronounced top end, but are a decent inexpensive alternative to NS10s. The stands are really great too, I was very surprised by their quality. All in all I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend them as a great second pair of monitors, but if you are seriously interested in good monitors save an extra hundred bucks as there are much better monitors available for not much more these have no bass worth mentioning.
