Yamaha HS Series Monitors
Ever since the 1970's the iconic white woofer and signature sound of Yamaha's nearfield reference monitors have become a genuine industry standard for a reason - their accuracy. Unlike studio monitors with added bass or treble frequencies which may sound more flattering at first, HS Series speakers were designed to give you the most honest, precise reference possible, providing an ideal sonic platform to build on throughout the mixing process.
By combining acquired knowledge and expertise with state-of-the-art sound technologies, Yamaha's speaker engineering team have examined, then optimized, every aspect that has contributed to making these monitors the most trusted in the business. The second generation HS Series also adds a new 6.5" model to the lineup, bringing its exceptional accuracy to an even greater variety of recording environments.
Newly Developed Transducers
The HS Series features newly developed transducers that achieve astonishingly smooth response over a wide range of bandwidth. These transducers utilize an advanced magnetic field design that regulates the flow of magnetic response to provide seamless, natural sonic transitions.
High Performance Amp Unit
HS Series speakers employ an amplifier unit perfectly matched to the transducers utilized in each model of the series. Featuring a bi-amp design with a separate dedicated amp for both the woofer and the tweeter, this amplifier unit ensures that each HS Series speaker consistently delivers high-resolution sound with exceptionally flat response across the sound spectrum.
Controls and Connectivity
HS Series full-range models feature two response controls with detailed settings that allow them to adapt to the surface acoustics of rooms of varying shape and size. For inputs, HS full-range speakers can accommodate a wide range of balanced and unbalanced sources such as mixers, keyboards and audio interfaces with XLR and TRS phone jacks.
Low Resonance Enclosure Design
HS Series cabinets are designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and increase the accuracy of sound reproduction to their extreme limit. The enclosures are constructed from a very dense and resilient MDF with a damped acoustic response that is perfectly suited for reference monitors.
Cutting Edge Noise Reduction
Speaker port design can greatly influence the clarity of overall sound. Often a vortex at the either end of the port can generate air vibrations inside of the port, causing unwanted noise. By adopting an advanced noise reduction technology that incorporates a thorough analysis of a visual representation of the sound, Yamaha's engineers are able to control and reduce the vortex.
New HS Install Versions
The new installation version of the renown Yamaha HS Studio Monitors include mounting points and screws for installation. Compatible with wall, ceiling, and baton brackets (sold separately.

What's in the box
Product Description
When selecting studio reference monitors for mixing and music production, one consideration takes precedence above all others - accuracy. Beginning with the legendary NS-10M, and continuing with the MSP and previous HS Series, this new lineup shares a design philosophy that emphasizes sonic purity without any coloring or alternation of the original sound. While many manufacturers seek to enhance the sound of their monitors to make them sound impressive, Yamaha studio monitors are designed to achieve the best possible mix by ensuring that the sound from your speakers is true to the original. HS Series nearfield reference monitors are the embodiment of this philosophy, delivering a concise sound image, high resolution, and flat response.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2016Style: Monitor SpeakerSize: 6.5"Color: BlackSet: Single UnitVerified PurchaseTHESE. ARE. SO. RAD. ( I got the HS7's FYI ).
I reference any other speakers off of the pair of Bowers and WIlkins 684 floorstanders that I have. Keep in mind that these cost half the price of those and I am just as impressed, all things considered. While these don't produce as "big" of a sound and can't pump out as much volume due their much smaller size, they sound just as pristine to my ears. Now, don't get me wrong, these can fill a bedroom sized room with plenty of sound to satisfy a reasonable listener. Especially if they are placed within a few feet of your ears as I believe they are intended to be placed. That is where they sound best. I have mine about 3 feet from each ear and it is good.
When I first fired these up they sounded a little bright or maybe even harsh on higher treble end. Either I got used to that or they broke in nicely, because they sound just right now after about a hundred hours of use at low to medium volume.
At lower volume they tend to lack a little bottom end, and at very high volume the clarity suffers and things start getting a little distorted and muddy. At medium to medium-high volume is where these really shine. If you're using these as studio monitors as they are intended to be used, this volume range is where you'd want to be listening anyways, for various reasons. For one, you don't want to listen at loud volumes for long periods because it will fatigue your ears to the point that listening is longer pleasurable and probably not as objective as is necessary. Also you can damage your ears. You only get one set of ears. Once they're messed up, that's it. I already have some ringing in my ears from my younger days and wish I could go back and do those rock concerts over with ear plugs. Another reason is that if you mix with your speakers at high volume, it won't translate well to anyone who ever listens to what you're mixing at lower volumes. So if your sounds are ever going to be played anywhere besides a dance club, this is a legit reason. So that's that. Right there in the middle of the volume range these puppies are capable of very nice sounding audio.
I've heard other people wonder about these as an option general music listening speakers, like you would with a good set of hifi speakers. On top of using them as studio monitors, I use them for this purpose too. I like listening to all of the music I listen to on them. If you aren't the kind of person that feels like Beats by Dre are the greatest sounding audio experience ever on the face of all of the universe, I'd bet you'll enjoy these. These will not blast your eardrums will ungodly amounts of bass and treble very loudly like Beats do. They will, however, show you a crystal clear image of what your music really sounds like. And if it' good music, it'll probably sound very good on these.
Also, on top of of all this, they look great, and the finish on the exterior is pretty durable too. I dropped a hammer or something rather on top of one of them and it didn't even leave a mark.
TLDR; I love them and highly recommend them is what this all boils down to If you can fit these in you budget, do it. Really one of the more satisfying purchases I've made. There may be better out there, but not at this price. //end rant.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2025Style: Monitor SpeakerSize: 6.5"Color: BlackSet: Single UnitVerified PurchaseThey are great studio monitors my son mixes and records music, guitars he plays, but he mixes and records everything and these sound flawless in catching all details.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2025Style: Monitor SpeakerSize: 3.5"Color: BlackSet: Monitor PairVerified PurchaseThey have excellent build quality, the sound quality is clear, it doesn't provide much in the way of base so if you're looking to rattle your teeth your going to need a sub. I don't really use the volume knob on it I set it once and now just rely on the volume knob on my interface. I had no issues setting them up pretty much plug and play. They seem to be an excellent value for there price I would recommend them. Ohh the physical power switch on the back of them is a nice touch.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2025Style: Monitor SpeakerSize: 4.5"Color: BlackSet: Monitor PairVerified PurchaseBought the Presonus 3.5s... Sent them back. Bought the Edifier MR4s... Sent them back. Cheap is never the option unless you literal have no choice.
I'm new to production but am really into sounds. Sounds in the back of tracks, taps, kicks, bumps you name it I've always loved listening to the mysterious sounds in the back of music.
I didn't know what Studio Monitors were like before I got them, the other two had low hissing and would cut out souns at a "too high" volume. I did not know Studio Monitors were like old-school receivers and would cut out or "distort" when played too loud but I'm into music so I know it's an Amp issue. These let me play my music a little higher and the first time I played them I noticed something in my mix I didn't notice with both of the other speakers.
If you're serious get this, if you don't really care about nuances buy the MR4s. If you don't care about a low audible hum, the Presonus 3.5 are ok but I truly don't recommend them.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2025Style: Monitor SpeakerSize: 4.5"Color: WhiteSet: Monitor PairVerified PurchaseVery nice bass and sound for this size, definitely needs a sub to help with low ends, but it holds itself together mostly. Have very good clarity even when blasting them at full volume, The white color is very nice and looks great. The build is sturdy and feels real.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2024Style: Monitor SpeakerSize: 4.5"Color: WhiteSet: Monitor PairVerified PurchaseI'm still breaking these in so I'll report back if the sound improves a lot after 40 hours of burn-in noise. For now, they sounds very flat, except for the roll off at around 80hz. I have a pair of HS5s and an HS8S subwoofer in another room, so I'm certainly hyper aware of the lack of sub bass when listening to these. Pairing these with a sub would probably be the perfect setup for a small room.
Size limitations aside (these are probably as good as 3.5" speakers get), I love the features on these. The volume/on-off knob is perfect for me. I run these from an audio interface with just one volume knob, so being able to go from headphones to speakers easily is awesome. Pairing these with a sub would make that less seamless though.
Overall, these deliver the relatively flat Yamaha transparency in a smaller footprint at a smaller sticker price.

Beautiful true sound, no enhancement. You can hear every detail in your production perfectly. Great amount of thump for the size as well. I had the Behringer truths before and when I hooked these up I almost felt like remastering all my music lol.
Yamaha does not let me down...ever.
Quality monitors at a starving musicians price🤣🤣
I've been producing for over 30 years and have used many different types of speakers in different types of studio environments.

Style: Monitor SpeakerSize: 5"Color: BlackSet: Single UnitVerified PurchasePaired with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 connected via balanced XLR cables. Zero noise. I was at first thinking what's the big deal? Are the HS5's too small for a small editing suite?
Pulled up my go-to Dire Straits Brother's in Arms album to just enjoy in the editing suite.
Perfection. Cannot go back to PC speakers...ever. I don't listen to music in my editing setup as a rule, but I sure will now. As far as the flat response etc...sure, they do that too :-)
