The speakers, which are sold as a pair, each use a 5-inch high-compliance, polypropylene, mica-filled woofer and .5-inch PEI dome tweeter. The drivers are optimized for high rigidity but low mass, giving them reasonably high sensitivity (80 dB with 2.83V at 1 meter), another way of saying modest amplifiers won't have much trouble driving them. Their acoustic-suspension cabinets are sealed to prevent undue resonance or tubby, tuneless bass, which often results from low-cost ported designs.
With a nominal impedance of 6 ohms, the speakers will work nicely with amplifiers up to 35 watts per channel, nominal, or 120 watts, peak power. They boast a frequency response of 80 to 40,000 Hz (+/-3 dB), giving you decent bass output for their compact size and unusually extended high-frequency response for your most demanding digital media. For indoor use, you may want to augment their performance with a subwoofer to deliver deeper and more powerful bass; be sure to select one with a variable crossover so you can tailor its upper frequency to effectively "take over" at the point of the NS-AW150Ws' lowest deliverable frequency.
The speakers are magnetically shielded, so you can place them on or near a TV or video monitor without fear of picture degradation from their magnetic fields. Five-way binding posts simplify connection with several different terminations of speaker cable (including banana plugs), and the NS-AW150Ws even come with two lengths of cable to get you started.
While you wouldn't want to leave the speakers exposed on, say, the deck of a boat, they are water resistant and designed to withstand light wind and rain--a benefit of their sealed enclosures and rugged metal grilles. The speakers come with mounting bases and brackets.
What's in the Box
Two speakers, two lengths of speaker cable, speaker bases, mounting brackets, a warranty card, and a user's manual.

I mounted these babies on the back wall of my house, about four feet apart, just under the eave, so that they pointed out at the deck. Although the mounting brackets are included, Yamaha does NOT include any screws to secure these brackets to the wall. I ended up using some 2-1/2 inch long wood screws...but your application may differ depending on how or with what your house is sided.
Yamaha also does NOT include speaker cable. I used some cheap 12-gauge stuff from Best Buy but 14 or 16-gauge lamp cord (also known as zip cord) from any hardware store will work just as well. Seeing as the speakers will be outside, I don't recommend the usual cheap, thin speaker cable that you normally see. Use the heavy stuff.
I hooked the Yamahas up to a Marantz 2240B receiver from the '70s and good God almighty, the sound is absolutely fantastic! Bass, you ask? The bass was so powerful, I had to turn the loudness control OFF! It seems that the location of the speakers up by the eave serves to reinforce the bass quite well, thank you.
Midrange comes through great. Both male and female vocals, as well as rock band stuff, is crystal clear. Nice highs as well. This system sounded so good that we ended up sitting outside until well after dark.
For something to sound as good as these speakers do, for as little money as I had to shell out, is absolutely fantastic. Highly recommended.
Instead of tossing the speakers in the trash I decided to toss them in the shed (which had moved but was still standing) just in case they still worked.
Fast forward three months and my house is pretty much repaired with a new porch. Tonight I decided to hook the speakers up to see if they somehow managed to survive a tornado. The brackets were still attached and only one of the side screw knobs was broken off, but could still tighten since only the actual screw was still in place. The grills were slightly dented and they both have lots of scuffs.
Anyway, I plugged them in, cranked up Spotify, and hit power on the receiver.... and booming crisp sound pumped out of both speakers sounding just as awesome as the day I bought them.
I'm normally pretty lazy when it comes to posting reviews, but I felt like this was worthy of a quick post. If durability is your concern, then these speakers should certainly get some consideration. I'm also impressed with the sound quality, though I admit I am no expert and have not owned other outdoor speakers to compare them to.
I have a wide variety of yamaha speakers and while these are probably my worst sounding of the bunch, they are only the only ones that would work in my outdoor lanai area so I take the sound with a grain of salt. For the money and what they are used for I am very happy with them. I can easily angle them to put a variety of directions, the set up was very easy, and combined with a volume control switch they do a great job of providing tunes on my patio.
If you need outdoor speakers these are a good choice. Granted I don't have them in a totally weather exposed area where they would get direct rain or anything so I can't speak to that, but in the humid outdoor of a florida lanai, they have held up well.
I would NOT use these indoor or anywhere that you can safely put 'indoor' rated speakers because the sound for these would pale in comparison to true indoor speakers but for the outdoors these work great.
I would buy again

These speakers pack a serious punch for the size. I have four on my patio (which is probably over kill) and they sound amazing. I didn't even need to purchase a subwoofer.Published 21 hours ago by Tasha

These are a re-order, as we've had them before (over 5 years, if not more), and we love them! Perfect outdoor speakers for our deck. Read morePublished 12 days ago by Regina Philange
