Yamaha's policy of always putting sound quality first, combined with decades of experience in producing fine speakers, ensures that the sound of these speakers is superior to that of many other in-ceiling speakers. the ns-ic800, ns-ic600 and ns-ics600 use a blue pp. (polypropylene) mica cone woofer and fluid-cooled soft- dome swivel tweeter in a coaxial design. the tweeter swivels so it can be aimed for most effective high frequency output. the ns-ic400 features a Yamaha original double-layer cone that delivers very natural sound tonality. a unique ridge-shape aluminum center cap with a stepped speaker surround eliminates mid-high frequency peaks, so the sound is delivered smoothly and musically. The NS-IC800 8-inch speaker is good for 2-channel sound reproduction or home theater use in a living room, dining room, family room or bedroom. The design of these speakers is very practical. They have a noticeable grain-finished acoustic baffle with a spiral pattern which makes the sound disperse naturally. The slim fringe grille becomes almost invisible after installation, so it won't conflict with your interior decor. A sealed back cover protects both speaker unit and crossover from dust and moisture.
Quick and Easy Installation
The paintable grille with magnets makes it easy to attach or remove for quick installation. The large mounting clamp with non-slip tread grips ceilings or walls firmly for sure installation. In my new home, I resolved to not cheap out. I decided to get the NSIC800WH 6 speaker set. Could not believe they ended up around only $100 a speaker and I would have a spare to boot.
I played some music and I was absolutely shocked that these speakers could actually pump out some bass. There was some thump!
Coupled with my Polk subwoofer the sound fills the room very well and is extremely cohesive.
I found they work best if you can box them in above the sheetrock ( no problem for me as the space above the media room is an attic). Not only does this help reflect sound down into the room, but it stops insulation gumming up the bass drivers and ensures the crossovers have circulating air around them to prevent overheating. Finally, it maintains the fire barrier rating of the ceiling. I made my boxes out of 4 x1/2 inch pine boards and 1/2 inch plywood. No prizes for my cabinet making though!
Anyway, so I've got six in the media room, four more ready to go into the den. I need two more each for the dining room and master bedroom, four more for the upstairs game room ceiling. So that makes eighteen units already bought or planned.
They're great for HT surround sound, easy to fit, and if you know how to wire speakers in phase, a doddle to wire up. Screw down terminals would have been nicer, but the springs in the spring terminals are good and strong. You can also use banana plugs if you wish.
Sound wise muzak service and HT surround, great. Audiophile stereo? No really. But then I wouldn't presume to compare a pair of $100 to $200 speakers, in ceiling or bookshelf, with $10,000 floorstanders and nor should you.
Previously had Monoprice Caliber In Ceiling Speakers 8 Inch Fiber 2-Way (pair) - 104104. Like the Yamaka NSIC800WH so much better. They are clearer, more crisp sounds. Both are the same installation, but the yamaha have a magnetic grill front while the Monoprice are pushed into the right spot.
The NSIC800WH is about $20/speaker more then the monoprice. I think the quality of product and sound quality is about right for the difference in cost.
Make sure you have an amp powerful enough to drive these. With a weak amp they will sound like through a hole in the wall; pretty much the same as a toy bluetooth speaker you can get for 20 bucks.
Changed the amp to 2x100W from Yamaha and wholey woley what a world of difference! These can pump some serious music. Do they match the RTI-A9 from Polk in my TV room, heck no....BUT in the kitchen (recent remodel) they are waaaaaay more than needed. Sonos has nothing on my setup which costs probably less than half and the Yamaha amp has build in Bluetooth for little over a hundred bucks, WIN-WIN!. Would certainly buy again/more.
They are very easy to mount AND are very secure. (some genius unique mounting indeed!)
They have wonderful magnetic grill covers to finish off an already easy install.
They sound great! Now those movie scenes, like thunderstorms, are far more realistic.
They complete my missing link to enable ATMOS sound with my new Yamaha RX-A860BL receiver.
Highly recommended without hesitation!
I have never gone above $200 per pair for ceiling speakers. Although there may be better speakers in higher price ranges these are the best I've experienced anywhere close to this price range.
