Rich Experience, Tradition, and High Technological Expertise
Yamaha has a long history – over 125 years – as a musical instrument maker as well as an exceptional reputation for Hi-Fi components. The R-N301 is created by taking advantage of this rich experience and high technological expertise. Based on the concept of “Natural Sound,” Yamaha reproduces all music as it really sounds. Being built with scrupulous care from circuit designs to basic sound reproduction, even entry models produce rich, high quality sound.
Network Streaming Services
Support for music streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora allows you to enjoy a wide variety of your favorite music content. Additionally, vTuner Internet radio provides access to thousands of radio stations throughout the world.
FLAC or WAV 192 kHz / 24-bit Audio Playback
Compatibility with FLAC / WAV files up to 192 kHz / 24-bit playback is built in, bringing you accurate sound with rich expressive power that's only possible from high resolution sources. Yamaha technologies refined over many years ensure high stability and reliability during playback.
The R-N301 Network Receiver has virtually all of your music playback bases covered. This includes full compatibility with AirPlay—which means you get the convenience of wireless music playback from your Mac, iPod, iPhone or iPad, as well as from a PC.
NETWORK PLAYER CONTROLLER App
The NETWORK PLAYER CONTROLLER app allows you to browse through music sources on your smartphone or tablet. View song information and album art. What’s more, it features the Music Play function that lets you enjoy music streaming without having to select a different app. Compatible with either smartphones or tablets, it also gives you control of the receiver volume, inputs, settings and much, much more.
Connect To a TV and/or Blu-ray Disc Player With Digital Inputs
The R-N301 is equipped with both optical and coaxial digital input terminals. The optical is for receiving audio from a TV and the coaxial for receiving audio from a Blu-ray Disc player. The audio stays in the digital domain, giving you pure, pristine, dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources.
DC out for Optional Accessories such as YBA-11 and YWA-10
The R-N301 provides a DC out connection for the YBA-11 Bluetooth wireless audio receiver and the YWA-10 Wi-Fi adapter. This makes it easy to stream and enjoy wireless music from an iPhone and other devices within the listening area.
YWA-10 Wi-Fi Adapter*
The YWA-10 makes it possible to stream music wirelessly to the AV receiver from a PC, NAS drive or internet source. A two LAN port design supports connection of other network device such as a Blu-ray Disc player. Power is supplied from the receiver via DC out over USB. *optional accessory

Airplay client for all iPhone users, Spotify and Pandora for my own uses. I added a Chromecast audio since unfortunately it doesn't have that built in. But you can change inputs from the app.
The Yamaha network adapter is junk. I have my garage wireless hooked up via nanostations so I just ran an Ethernet cable from the receiving nanostations to the stereo. But if you can't hard wire, get a tplink n150/300 travel router and use it in client mode. Cheaper and better than Yamahas dongle
- Phone app allows you to control power, volume, inputs and stations. This means if you connect the receiver to the same network as your phone, you can place it out of sight and use your phone as the remote control.
- Plenty of inputs - I connected a computer, CD player, and Bluetooth adapter.
- If you're a programmer you can control this thing with some simple XML api calls and build your own remote app or schedule it to turn on and off while you're away.
- Screw-down speaker connectors (not springs) for a firm connection.
- Was able to browse and play songs from a UPNP server on the network from the remote app.
- No "tape loop" for an equalizer. (Yes, I know you can install an EQ inline, but that would only apply to one remote controlled input.)
- No loudness control or tone adjustments beyond bass and treble.
- The remote app is great once you find it, but Yamaha has too many apps! The one you want for this receiver is "NP Controller".
- Once in the app, changing sources is obvious but volume is not. Tip: click the little arrow at the bottom to "reveal" the volume and power buttons.
They really "knocked it out of the park" on features with this receiver. On sound quality, I have owned a Yamaha surround receiver in the past and been impressed with it, so I was willing to take a chance on this one despite lack of advanced tone controls or equalizer. However, after adjusting the bass/treble controls to my liking, it sounds decent and seems to be working well for outdoor speakers.
There are 2 problems 1) I can't control the volume on the A and B channels separately and 2) Spotify connect randomly drops out with this amp or it switches to another song midway into a song. In short you can't rely on it. I had to buy a used sonos connect to play to this. And that combination works perfectly. But it cost me $250 extra for something this was supposed to do.
