Top Customer Reviews
This unit is designed to link video equipment and output their associated audio. It's not designed for serious or even dedicated music listening. The unit offers a number of pre-configured sound-modifying selections, each adding fixed amounts of reverb along with slight fixed tonal adjustments to enhance your movie viewing or gaming experience. When you play music, if you're happy with whatever sound comes out, you'll be satisfied with this model. But if you're the type that tweaks controls to get the best sound out of each recording, then you might be in for disappointment. I was very surprised to discover (especially from a company known for music) to find only bass, treble and sub-woofer tonal adjustments. The controls offer only (+-)6 db of adjustment and are accessible only through menus. My old, free Winamp app included a 10 channel equalizer with (+-)12 db adjustment, with choice of visualizers to boot. Yamaha devoted a lot of hardware and firmware to decoders, special spatial effects and multi-room networking but left out the most important audio adjustments.
As advertised, this unit does have internet radio capability. But you cannot listen to a streaming source by entering its url. You can listen only to stations offered through vTuner.com. And the manual adds, "This service may be discontinued without notice." The list of available stations are poorly organized, a pain to browse and some have location restrictions. If Yamaha discontinues its arrangement with vTuner.com, will they provide a firmware update to allow direct entry of url's?
First, and foremost, I needed the new HDMI spec for 4k gaming from my PC. The older version of HDMI only supports 24 fps at 4k, which is terrible when you pay good money for a GPU that can run games at 4k 60fps.
Secondly, I wanted to try dabbling in Dolby Atmos, and this is the lower end of the price point for that feature. Normally you'd have to go to there Aventage line of receivers, but this one and the next model up in the RX-V line now have Atmos.
Third, I wanted to give music cast a try as well. And I can say I'm thoroughly impressed with that feature. I will say that the speakers are a bit over-priced at the time of this review (~250) but it's an awesome alternative to running low volt wires throughout the house. Which you're limited to anyway with only one additional zone (more on that in a moment).
Last, I also wanted a bluetooth capable receiver. Granted, the model I had was capable, but you needed to purchase an additional dongle for the BT capability. On that same note, I will say it paired with my Echo Dot perfectly, and can also transmit bluetooth as well (a nice feature).
One of my only gripes, and it's not worthy of knocking a star off, is the zone setup. If you truly want 7.1.2 plus a second zone, you're out of luck. The best you can do is 5.1.2 plus a second zone. This is explained in the receiver features, and I knew this when I purchased it, but I still feel like if you're going to integrate something like Atmos into a receiver, make it capable of more channels . Although this is one of the features you'd pay for in the Aventage line, should you go that route.
Overall it's an amazing receiver in this price range. The menus are a little more polished than the last generation and are snappier as well. Physically the unit looks the same, with only a port or two missing up front (which I never used anyway). I've always been a fan of Yamaha units, and they didn't fail to deliver as always with this one.
