I replaced a piece of crap Vizio. My wife and I could not make out any dialogue with the Vizio—anytime we watched an action movie, I had to have my hand on the volume control so I could turn it up during dialogue and then turn it down during action.
Enter the Yamaha YAS-106 with a special button called "Clear Voice". I bought it for this reason alone. I recommend turning it on and never turning it off again. Dialogue is so clear now and the sound in general is so much better.
BONUS: They give you a optical cable.
The only negatives I can point to is that when listening to movies and tv through it, the dialogue can sometimes be hard to hear, even if I select the clear voice option. I may just have to play around with the different settings to get it right. That leads me to the other aspect that I have an issue with. I have mine laying on the entertainment center, and while I can see when I change something with the remote because I can see the LED lights move, I cannot tell from sitting, what exactly I did. Did I turn on the surround sound, or off? because the labels for the lights noting what is on and what is off are on the top of the bar (when lying on the entertainment center) I cannot see what they are. I have to walk over to the tv and see what I am changing. It is not a huge deal, but with the exception of the volume, if you do not know what setting the bar is on to begin with, you might as well get up and adjust it on the bar itself.
I use this primarily with my roku or tv with an hdmi cable. The sound is fantastic, there is an app you can download on your phone to tweak the settings to your liking. The sound output is unbelievable. I'm incredibly pleased with this purchase.
The only possible negative (for some people) is that the lights are placed on top of the unit. So if this sits on a shelf you can't easily see which options are on/off. However I'm perfectly ok with this and probably actually prefer it. When I'm watching a movie with the lights out, I don't have to be distracted by the indicator lights.
Pros:
I like the HDMI in and HDMI(ARC) out function but their are problem (see Cons). Sound quality is actually pretty good. Streaming songs from my phone via Bluetooth is a nice feature. It's fairly easy to use with the units remote or your phone app.
Cons:
The unit by default is in standby mode so after 8 hours it turns off. When I turn on the unit in the next day their is no sound because HDMI (ARC) for some reason gets out of sync or perhaps or is faulty, difficult to say. To get sound from the unit I have to reach behind and tap a button a couple times to activate HDMI input. Sometimes it works, most of the time turning the tv off and on and re-select the HDMI input is what gets it to work. With standby disabled I still have issues with the HDMI (ARC) not syncing. Sound controls on my tv remote will stop working, but I still have sound through the unit. Turning the unit on and off, changing input will eventually resolve it. This is the only multimedia device I have ever had to fiddle with months after the initial setup. I've decided to start looking for an alternative. As much as I wanted this to work it fails. I'm torn between 1 1/2 and 2 stars. Thus 2 stars.
