Editorial Reviews

Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico was recorded and filmed during Yanni's two concerts there in December 2011. The first artist to ever perform at this UNESCO Heritage Site, Yanni fulfilled a 20 year dream to play at the beautiful and historic 16th-century Castillo San Felipe Del Morro in San Juan a spectacular setting for this live concert. For two sold-out audiences, Yanni and his world-renowned orchestra performed an inspired set of favorites from throughout his career including "Felista," "Voyage," "Nightingale," "The End of August," and more.

This includes a CD and a DVD. The DVD will play only on Dolby 5.1.

International concert and artist Yanni and his orchestra demonstrate once again they are a leading team of the best musicians worldwide who are prepared to light up the night sky and take the world by storm. In the case of Yanni and the orchestra's recent live concert event at the historic El Morro fortress in Puerto Rico, the saying "take the world by storm" holds two meanings. The Oceanside concert venue of Castillo San Felipe del Morro citadel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, presented a challenge for the team by the inclement weather, typical for the historic El Morro coastal locality. It looked as if a miracle was the only hope for the final evening concert scheduled for Saturday night. As it turned out, a windswept atmosphere became a dramatic, silver lining for the ultimate Yanni concert experience.

Yanni-Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico turned out to be an intensely glorious concert event for fans of the international concert artist Yanni, and his sensational orchestra, who are unquestionably, a quality group of the best artists worldwide. If you have ever had an opportunity to attend a live Yanni concert firsthand, or have watched a televised live PBS concert, then you know each and every concert performance is special, regardless of the venue or historical significance. For over 30 years, Yanni has made his presence known as a leading international concert artist with around one billion admirers. A single concert event, Yanni Live at the Acropolis is the top fundraising program for PBS, which had an astounding 500 million television viewers from 65 countries. The Taj Mahal in India and The Forbidden City in China concert are more examples where PBS viewership reached a television audience of 250 million people.

It has only been six years since Yanni released his last live album entitled Yanni Live! The Concert Event. While some things remain the same, such as Yanni's always reliable drummer Charlie Adams along with a few other repeating band members, what is very obvious is the focus on new material as well as Yanni's high energy enthusiasm that has translated into his latest live recording. Recorded on the most north western point of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico, the El Morro fort is rugged yet romantic. Apparently, the location has rubbed off on Yanni's performance that is touching yet dynamic, resulting in a moving live performance courtesy of the CD/DVD presentation of Live At El Morro, Puerto Rico.

Struggling with the unknown elements of the weather, which is clearly evident via the DVD presentation, Yanni begins the show boldly by presenting his audience with the gorgeous title track from his last studio album Truth Of Touch. He then double dares himself by jumping right into the more aggressive "Vertigo" also from his brand new album. Talking charge on the keyboards, Yanni does not hesitate to allow fellow keyboard player Ming Freeman to spotlight later into the song, supplemented by the pounding drums of Adams.

While there are only ten tracks on the cd live performance, Yanni chooses wisely by also sharing two live renditions of older songs for the first time. The first obvious one is "Nightingale" taken from the Tribute album with a simply sublime vocal performance from Lauren Jelencovich. She continues her magnificent vocal performance courtesy of "Ode To Humanity" (previously titled "Aria" that received significant exposure on the British Airways advertisement).

A good DVD of his live concert, but I liked the "Voices" DVD from 2009 better as it had a larger orchestra, featuring Ann Marie Calhoun (born Simpson). She is the older sister of the featured violinist Mary Simpson on this DVD, by the way. Also, Voices featured twice the number of songs - 22 as opposed to the 11 on this DVD, plus several encore performances.

I've always loved the music of Yanni. I first discovered him while at college over twenty years ago, and I'm still listening. When I read online that he was having a concert in San Juan, I was quite happy, since I was born and raised in Puerto Rico: but when I found out it was at El Morro, I was elated. I couldn't be there, but as soon as the CD was released, I knew I had to buy it. I'm quite happy with the songs. I even showed part of the DVD to students at my children's elementary school, so they could see El Morro, being a UN World Heritage Site and part of our National Park Service. The kids were simply wowed by the views of El Morro.

One of the things he touched on the DVD side is that it was very difficult to have a full night's concert due to the storms. There are so many rain storms in Puerto Rico, especially the Northern and Eastern coasts. (The Southern to Southwestern coast, by contrast, is a bit more arid.) I wish they had thought better before exposing all that electronic and musical equipment to the rainstorms. Weather is quite unpredictable over there. Believe me, I know.

I'm glad he goes to Puerto Rico mostly for pleasure, and I'm quite certain he's not the only one. I met a lady close to where I live who is Greek. She had been to Puerto Rico before and told me about someone she had met in Old San Juan who was very successful at his business there, and spoke Spanish perfectly well. As soon as she told him she was Greek, he started speaking Greek. It turns out there are quite a few Greeks who have made Puerto Rico their permanent home, and had even married local people. I haven't been back in a long time, but my family and I intend to visit again, especially now that my children are a little more ready to handle travel. Who knows if we see him somewhere in El Viejo San Juan?
