About the author

Award-winning author Patricia Preston wrote her first short story in the sixth grade. All she recalls is the title, Priscilla's Christmas. Still, the fun of writing stuck with her. Today, she enjoys writing romances with charming heroines and irresistible heroes. All her books, regardless of the subgenre, are traditional romances featuring an emotional and compelling romantic journey. The books have memorable secondary characters, romantic settings, and fun, feel-good moments that will leave the reader smiling. The series books can be read as stand-alone romances. Many of her interests and favorite places are often reflected in her books. She loves old homes, romantic décor, antiques, flea markets, history, music, graphic art, and cooking.

He let his little head do the thinkin' his big head shoulda been doin' and he up and run off with the piano player from church.
Before he and that tramp (we all knew she was trouble, and she really didn't play the piano all that well, bless her shrunken little heart) hit the Cheatin' Highway for parts unknown, however, the sumbitch drained their joint bank account.
So now Jennifer is not just broken-hearted.
She's broke.
Period.
What to do? What do to?
Why, this bein' America and all, you really got just two choices when you're a woman and something like this happens to you.
You either write you a country song, get all gussied up and go to Nashville where you sing your way into America's boot-scootin' hearts.
Or you hold a yard sale.
Jenny can't sing so she held her a yard sale in Patricia Ann Preston's short story of the same name and it went just fine, thank you very much.
Preston, who is well known for writing sassified Southern humor, tells the story of this yard sale in Clayburn, Mississippi in a free and easy style that puts you on the front porch watching Jenny and her Aunt Gail go about their business while fending off across-the-street competition and dealing with folks who are looking for bargains.
She even takes a little time in this delightful story to update us on local-girl-made-good Darlene Durand (who used to be a Higginbottom before she went to Hollywood, changed her name and became a movie star. Lord that was so many years ago. Didn't she leave town in a hurry? Somethin' about her and the mayor?)
"The Yard Sale" is not long but it's full of characters: Jenny's Uncle Buddy, who sets up a karaoke machine on the porch; little Bucky Sue, who sings a lot like Loretta Lynn; Gossip Queen Theodora Mae Trussler and a few others all drop by either to pick something up for the house or just to see how Jenny's doin' now that she's also lost her hotel job in an economy driven downsize move.
Preston also throws a couple of nice little twists into the story. One involves a painting by the late Thomas Kinkade and the other features a handsome young antique dealer with a sharp eye and sharper looks.
If you like stories about regular folks doin' their best to get by in an uncertain world while still retaining a sense not only of humor but also of decency, take "The Yard Sale" for a test drive.
Go ahead and when you get back, why, kick the tires some and then look under the hood.
If you do, I think you'll like what you see and, if you're like me, you'll go lookin' for some other stuff Miz Preston has written.
As a guy, I don't fit into this author's main audience. But I enjoy a good laugh as much as anyone and the premise was enough to make me think it had potential. Plus, my wife and I like to find books for one another and I thought she would enjoy this one. We both downloaded it, but I was the first to get to it. In short order I found myself reading sections of it out loud to my bride right after I'd finish them myself. Several times over the course of the next hour or so, the two of us shared laugh out loud moments, relating to one another about similar situations that occured in yard sales we had been involved with. We discovered that we knew most of the characters in the book and were quickly relating them to relatives and neighbors of our own. Ms. Preston created a group of people that I think just about anyone could relate to and then set them up in situations that were only slight exaggerations of the way actual people would face. Then she just allows them to react and deal with those situations as they will.
It works. In fact, it works brilliantly. I wouldn't call this a must read. It's more of a "should" read. When a good laugh is just the medicine you need to make you smile and feel better in the middle of a lousy day this is the perfect prescription. I've already picked up the next in the "Down Home Series" and perhaps this time, I'll let my better half read to ME.
Patricia Preston delivers yet another enjoyable, funny and easy read in the Humor and Happy Endings Series. As with the previous book I read in this series, the characters are incredibly well written. You can tell from the interaction between the three main characters that they are very close and have known each other for a long time. But it is not just the main characters that make this a great read, a cast of secondary characters help to add to the depth. Like the first book I read, this one drew me, keeping me entertained and wanting to know what happens at the most popular yard sale that the residence of Clayburn, Mississippi have ever seen.
I would love to know if Jennifer ended up with "Prince Charming" and if the treasures she finds really were as valuable as he claimed. Maybe there will be another book about Jennifer, I will keep my fingers crossed. But that is the magic of short stories, when the story ends your imagination can take over.
If you enjoy your books short and sweet with a bit of a twist at the end, then this book might be just what you have been looking for.
