Her raw authenticity is inspiring. But that's just the half of it.
No, the real magic is two-fold: 1) What Berni has done with the pain (i.e.: turn it around on it's ear, kick it in the ass and transform it into forward, hard driving, "shut up and do it!" motion! and 2) SHOW US how to do the same by leaving a LOT of giant, juicy breadcrumbs along the path.
Thank you, Berni. Your pain and courage to face it and transform it, gives the rest of the entrepreneurial world (all of us) an example to follow. In a workaday world that has killed more spirits than war and famine, personal power is transformational. The Year of the Big Bear gives us a way to tap into our own version of that power.
Berni, you rock. For such a little bear, you cast a pretty huge shadow!

Brilliantly simple. Abundantly inspiring. I will be definitely be revisiting this book on a regular basis.
Yeah she's a coach, solopreneuer and shin-kicker to get you motivated... but she also walks-the-walk and talks-the-talk. Simply put, she's worth bringing into your life because she's mask-less, raw and real.
And let's be honest, most of the world tells you what you want to hear, not what you 'ought' to hear.
She's been in the ring fighting and clawing to know herself and facing her fears. And because so, she is qualified to speak into your life and will tell you what you 'ought' to hear even if it ruffles your feathers a bit.
For the timid, do not buy this book.
Jump in periodically for mini inspiration moments or read it straight though in one sitting.

I thought about what is so powerful in this book and I came to this: empathy.
I may not be able to identify with everything Berni shares here. And because she and I seem to share some important attributes - character, commitment to causes, working in service, trauma survival, redefining entrepreneurship - I found a new guide, advisor, mentor and most importantly, an inspiring friend.
The Year of the Brave Bear is a fast read - should you want to tear through it - which makes it particularly valuable for (among the many who need to read it) those with their own business, those who are stuck and unsure of things in life, those who are flat out fearful. Why? Because like all great books, reading this one more than once is like revisiting the best antique shop: you find something different and something great each time you visit.
Berni's life has been much harder than mine, but the actions she's taken to live the life she created, resonates.
It's about throwing out the script, making your choices, granting permission... Read it, welcome it in your soul, and set out to spark your world.
Her story is a real story, one to which we can all relate, even if we didn't experience the exact same life journey. She pulls no punches and opens herself up for all to see. With her openness, honesty, humor and powerful, you will discover that her struggles will help you conquer your challenges. Read it!
