Sometimes you just need to know that someone else gets it. This book is about suffering, the suffering of the sick, yes but the more mysterious suffering of the healthy who care for them, already grieving. Certain insights, such as how tired Our Lord must have been when his needy throng of followers drained His last ounce of human energy, were like an illuminating flash. Others brought me back to a time far away when I cared for my own dying mother - Laraine doing jumping jacks at the foot of her mother's hospital bed to make her laugh made me remember how Mom laughed when I acted out the French scene from the movie, Henry V at her bedside. This book walks with you and gives you hope as you care for those you love. --Susie Lloyd, author of Please Don't Drink the Holy Water, Bless Me Father for I Have Kids, and Yes God!
Anyone enduring the particular struggles and sufferings of being a care giver will find refreshment, light and inspiration in these pages. --Rev. Thomas V. Berg, MA, PhD, Professor of Moral Theology, St. Joseph's Seminary (Dunwoodie)
The journey of Joseph and Mary as they fled to Egypt symbolizes the partnership of the caregiver and cared-for on their journey together. Since they had not made this trip before, they knew not when they would reach its end. Joseph: silent, loving, and attentive, had no days off, night out with the boys, or the help of other family members. Mary, vulnerable and wrestling with the same fear and a great deal of discomfort, was none the less fully engaged in staying the course, in reaching the goal. Both understood the need they had as persons to stop and rest along the way. They knew that without the water of refreshment and respite from the biting winds and sand, they would not survive. In a Year of Grace, 365 Reflections for Caregivers, Laraine Bennett uses short bites of Sacred Scripture, quotes from the day s liturgy and Christian writers, and adds just enough prayerful reflection to nourish both the caregiver and the cared- for. There is no time for long stopovers. We pause and go on. --Sister Paul Mary, ISP, Little Sisters of the Poor
From the Inside Flap
""Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you."" - 1 Peter 5:7
Nationally-known speaker and author Laraine Bennett knows the highs and the lows of the caregiver's world-she juggles her own work and family life as she helps meet the needs of her talented, artistic mother now completely incapacitated by a devastating stroke.
In A Year of Grace: 365 Reflections for Caregivers, Laraine offers daily respite for the weary caregiver, a chance to recharge and refresh the mind and spirit, and to look anew, with gratitude and hope, at the value of every human life.
Each brief daily reflection includes a Scripture reading or quote, and a reflection for the day. Enlightening, refreshing, and upbeat, A Year of Grace, is a daily reminder for you-the caregiver-of the important role you play to bring Christ's love to those in your care.

It is so easy, when living in the day to day of caretaking, to begin to feel burdened or frustrated by what seems like constant demands on your time and patience. I am inspired that the author was able to record her reflections as a caregiver and present them in a way that will inspire and support so many others in the same situation.
The book is filled with real-life, everyday vignettes tied to the scripture verse or spiritual quote of the day. The author transforms mundane encounters into grace-filled moments, rich with the beauty of God’s love. And, at times, God’s sense of humor! This is a book that truly “lightens the burden” and reminds me each morning that not only is God there, but He will give me the grace to follow His will.
I recommend buying the actual book (as opposed to the kindle version) because it is laid out so beautifully! I like to underline or star my “diamond” of the day and there is even room at the bottom of the page for notes, inspirations, or short journaling. I just ordered a copy for my sister, who along with our brother, shares in caring for our dad.
This book is a great companion for prayerfully and joyfully persevering through this season of life!
