I heard Crosswinds on KCRW today and was an instant convert before I even heard the vocal. J. Tillman is the drummer for a famous alternative band from Seattle. His solo music is stark, evocative, and powerful. Year in the Kingdom is beautifully produced, with a kind of magisterial restraint. In the words of some anonymous internet pundit: "For a guy with the back catalogue (and quality back catalogue) he has, why is he not a superstar?"

I agree very much with Ishmael's glowing review of this album, but I'm not quite blown away enough to give it 5 stars. At least not yet. But this is still a quietly powerful, intensely good collection of songs. I'm tempted to dub Tillman an "American Nick Drake", but that might be an unfair comparison. Nevertheless, there are parallels in the reflective, acoustic nature of these songs and the way they resonate with the listener. I'm also puzzled why J. Tillman is not better known, especially after the relative success of his most recent project, recording as Father John Misty. That album was one of my favorites of 2012, so wanting to hear more by this guy, I hunted this CD down and have been enjoying it very much the past few months. It's much more laid back and introspective than the Father John Misty album, but still a consistently good bunch of songs. Tillman possesses an excellent voice and the material he composes and sings on this album is a perfect vehicle for those vocals. Only about 35 minutes of music on this album, but not a note is wasted.

I've bought many copies to give to friends, everyone loves it. Josh Tillman & the musicians on this recording are masterful. Wish I could describe how beautiful, powerful, and disturbing (if you listen to the lyrics) it is. Would recommend any of his music. If you have a chance to see him (currently touring as Father John Misty, newest release is Fear Fun, which is excellent but a different mood than some of the J Tillman music) do it - you won't be sorry!!!

Very slow album and definitely none of the magic that Father John Misty has.
