Beginning with the rather cheesy bookcover this novel has quite a number of flaws that I will enumerate for the sake of a fully informative review that do not change the fact that this book is a long, satisfying read.

The story begins in medias res which is usually good for the sake of plot construction and rhythm but also implies some risks: world building and characterization must either be conveyed by the story itself -but it is not a skill every author possesses- or by flashbacks. Flashbacks here are not ill written in themselves and they DO provide the needed information but they are longish and only clumsily woven into the story.
The POV is also somewhat erratic. In the first part it shifts between the two leads from one chapter to the next. Later on it does it from one section to the next to end by doing it from a paragraph to the other. It is not too disrupting but it takes some adjustment and it is not stylistically in order.
There are also a couple of inconsistencies, one major: the alien Alfarian are said to be used to cooler climates at the beginning, to warmer ones in the middle and again to cooler ones at the end.

As for the content, I did not care too much for the overt derivation from Star Trek. Morgan, Lucien and Vanya closely resemble their counterparts Kirk, Spock and McCoy. An entire flashback is entirely drawn from the episode "Amok Time" from the second season of the original series. I also think that such inspiration should have been at least acknowledged explicitly by the author.
The mixed Far East/New Age philosophy that guides the study of the "Art" was quite confused and at times contradictory. Because of this the character of Myrddin is not entirely consistent and satisfactory which is a problem as he is pivotal.

I like the author's writing, but the fact that this book was basically queer Star Trek fan fiction (disguised enough to prevent copyright claims, but still obvious) was rather disappointing. I hope the author makes the jump to more original work. I'd love to see what s/he could do.

I did not think it plagiarized star trek, although the parallels are there. I have seen much more derivative work from major publisher. But, yes, it is gay romance/erotica and if that offends you DO NOT READ IT! The entire book follows the adventures and love life of a space captain who has been banished from everything he knows and discovers he is in love with his second in command. All of his dalliances are with men. If that sounds icky you'll hate this book.

I liked it. I thought it was intelligent and entertaining as well as being sexy and romantic. I loved both main characters as well as the supporting cast. My only complaint is probably the abruptness of the ending, but romance readers always want more out of the endings!

I actually gave it an extra star to help make up for bozos who will rate it poorly because they disapprove of the content. Boo hiss.

I feel this author has a lot of talent if it was expounded. What started to be a great plot ventured into a homosexual
longing and affair which repetitively took up most the rest of the plot which left the story lacking.
Originally it was a story of a spaceship and its captain being used as a pawn in an inter-space political move that went sour.
Left alone in the streets to survive he was approached by an individual with a special opportunity.
He developed added skills, but was led to search out other feelings during a very vulnerable time.
From there it went downhill. The story also contained unnecessary profanity but not excessive.
