Fast forward quite a few years and Mattie has learned some information about her real family that could be her saving grace, thanks to her grandmother, Ruth Ellen. She wants Mattie to help solve the mystery of her missing granddaughter. She wants nothing more than a family, a real family, to love and care for her so she agrees, but when K learns that Mattie’s family is insanely rich, and that there is a long-lost daughter, he concocts a scheme to get money. Mattie will pose as Elaine McKendrick, who disappeared when she was 5, and inherit the millions of dollars that is rightfully hers, then give the money to him. Holding the threat of hurting Molly over Mattie’s head, she has no choice but to do what K says.
While on the plane to Florida, Mattie meets Brant West, who just happens to be close to the McKendrick family, he’s practically engaged to Emeline McKendrick. There have been several imposters over the years claiming to be the long lost Elaine, and Brant is immediately suspicious of Mattie. There’s no way she could be a McKendrick…or could she? She claims to not remember anything from her childhood, but there are certain mannerisms in her that remind him of the McKendricks.
West impresses Mattie with his voice, and his music, and they immediately strike up a friendship. Elaine or not, West can’t help his attraction towards her. She brought out a side of him that lay dormant, and he wanted more. When he learns the truth, he feels betrayed, but he wants to know more about this girl. He’s torn between Mattie and Emeline, but when faced with losing everything he owns, Mattie offers him a solution too good to be true. What is the real reason behind it? Why is she really here? Can they survive a year together or will the secrets, the lies, and the past take everything away from them, including their lives?
A Year of You is a heartbreaking mystery full of love, lies, revenge, deceit and saving, death and freedom. It does hit heavily on abuse and rape, so if that is a trigger for you, this may not be a good story for you. There are absolutely way too many things going on to even attempt to summarize it all, but do yourself a favor and read this novel. You won’t be disappointed!
I feel like a giddy little school girl. I have been in a reading funk the past 6 or 7 books and I was quickly loosing hope that I was going to find that breathe of fresh air…Thank the Reading Gods that I found this one.
I love a great mystery. Throw in some dark and twisted family drama and I am hooked like a fat kid in a candy store. Some sexy man time, good fight scenes and questioning the real motives of the characters…PLEASE! Keep me on the edge of my seat darling and I will stalk you for more of your work!
Our female lead character is Mattie. This poor girl has been through hell and back and unfortunately for her the Devil himself keeps her on a tight leash. Just when she thinks she has the upper hand, her past comes back with a vengeance.
Our male lead, Brant or better known as West, is one of those guys that you are not really sure if you should like him, love him or hate him. I spent a good half of the book wanting to throttle him and the other half slightly crushing on him.
There is a bevy of supporting characters, all of which play huge roles in our MC’s lives. There are plenty of twists and turns and just enough angst to get the blood boiling. Ms. Roland did an excellent job at adding just enough to anger you but not take away from the plotline.
This was one of those books that I was just completely and totally lost inside. Time flew by and before I knew it 4 hours had passed and I hadn’t put a dent into how far I had read. Those types of books are hard to find and when you do you want to preach it like it’s the end of the world.
I cannot give much more other than this is one hell of a great read. There is language, violence (some graphic), sex and no cliff hanger. However I wouldn’t mind reading a sequel (hint, hint).
A Year of You is not for the faint of heart. There are some very dark moments. This story kept me turning pages and kept me up way past my bedtime.
