New Year's in Napa was a deliciously indulgent novella that I read in one sitting.
Mandy, a brilliant post-doc at Stanford, takes a break to meet up with her two friends who are planning their wedding in Napa. She runs into Liam, a man she couldn't commit to 2 years ago, but quickly, the attraction is reignited. With Liam, Mandy learns how to balance her professional demands and set time aside for herself.
I've enjoyed Elisabeth Barrett's novels and have read Christmas in Tahoe. I'd encourage everyone to read both, although one isn't necessarily dependent on the other. I finished this second book wanting to move on to the third book, and I hope it comes out soon! Looking forward to seeing what happens between Mandy and Liam, and the wedding of Chase and Annie. Is there a double wedding in the third novel? I suppose we'll all have to wait to find out!
I love Elisabeth Barrett style of writing.
I really enjoyed reading about Amanda and Liam and about Napa and wine.
I just wish the book was a little longer since I felt the ending was a too rushed.
I really enjoyed New Year's in Napa by Elisabeth Barrett. I was looking for a holiday story that was only slightly holiday-ish and this novella fit the bill perfectly. It is the second book in Ms. Barrett's West Coast Holiday series and it can be read as a standalone without skipping a beat.
Scientist and researcher Amanda Aligheri is plagued with guilt over an accident that almost cost her sister her life. So Mandy spends every available moment of her free time in her lab, trying to find ways to help her sister and others like her. Mandy is a beautiful woman who leads a very unexciting life. Although she craves adventure, she does not allow herself any pleasure. Two years ago she met the man of her dreams, but she let him go in order to continue researching 24/7.
Liam Flynn is a coding guru who left a very lucrative position to help out with his family's vineyard after his father had an almost fatal heart attack. He enjoys his new, less-stressed lifestyle, but craves to code almost constantly. His ho-hum existence gets a huge lift when Amanda shows up to help their mutual friends plan their wedding, which is being held at his family's vineyard. Liam and Amanda hit it off once again, and the magical week that they spend together between Christmas and New Year's, causes them to make drastic changes in their individual lives in order to be fulfill their New Year's resolutions.
I definitely plan on reading book one from this series and exploring the author's other works. I found Ms. Barrett's writing style to be nicely paced and I really liked how she developed the relationship between the main characters. Overall a solid read.

Pros: good story, good flow, likable characters, lots of sizzle, nice “I deserve to be happy” theme, as well as a “stand up for yourself” sub-theme.
Cons: too much repetitive detail on her job and his, and a slight theme of secret-thrill-seeker/turned-on-by-fear-of-discovery going on – which can be a pro or a con depending on your personal preference.
I received my advanced reading copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
