What I loved about this book is Bless accepted her assignment in the only way she knew how. Trapped in her shyness but wanting to please God, she committed to pray for these boys. As their drama’s unfold she remains steadfast in her prayers and shares her faith and in the process all of their lives are changed.
I know that sometimes a book speaks a different message than the author intended. That is one of the reasons I love Christian fiction. God uses the words he gives the author to speak to the reader’s heart in their need. This author takes you into the heart and mind of Bless and creates one of the strongest characters in a Christian novel that I have read in ages.
Hearing the Voice and unable to ignore it, Bless Heggins knows she must listen. Though still a teenager, Bless starts to realize she needs to help T’meal (an athlete who is posed to give up an opportunity), and Lamall (an out of control young man heading toward destruction). Quiet, shy, and perhaps full of self-doubt, Bless hides her passion for music to deal with the other things in life even though it may mean a loss for her. Faith, doubt, friendship, and romance all combine together in this coming-of-age novel by Nadine Keels.
A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
As a book geared towards young adults, Yella’s Prayers tackles some age appropriate issues. Written in such a manner that makes you feel as though you are back in high-school/ college again, the dialog and actions are so authentic to the generation. Reading through this book in just a few short sittings due to the flowing direction, the book actually ended before I was ready. Obviously a writer with a good command of the written English language, I marveled at how the story kept my attention. Well-written with a strong message, Yella’s Prayers will hopefully have a sequel, as I came to truly know the characters and watch their growth. It was enjoyable to be transported back to more youthful days, albeit quite a bit ago. (The Deleted Scenes accompaniment was a fun bonus upon finishing the book.)

It was interesting to see Bless grow throughout this story and how she prayed for the people in her life. Her struggles, especially concerning fear with others, really clicked with me and found myself being encouraged with her journey to not be as shy. Also, her honesty in her conversations with God really spurred my faith.
T'meal was probably my favorite character as he experiences so much growth in "Yella's Prayers." He had me go from not-really-cheering-for to being as joyful and excited as his Mom to see the transformation happening in him. He was just a wonderful guy and loved getting to know the real him alongside Bless.
When finishing this novel, I left knowing there is always hope for people, no matter how far or close they are to the Lord. I also took away to not "sit" on the gifts God has given me as well as others, but use them to glorify and encourage others.
