About Yellow Cottage Studios
My name is Dani and it is my hands that create the pottery on this site. Being creative has always been a part of me. Even when I was young I was addicted to paint by numbers! Remember those? I loved creating I did not take art in High School. Well, that's not really true, I did take an art class in high school but the teacher told me I had no talent. But I did not give up because as I said, I love to create. So here I am, a potter, and loving every dang day. My goal is to make unique, functional pottery that serves a purpose. Aside from the usual cups and bowls I love finding different types of things that are purposeful and will bring a little extra beauty into someones home. The first special item I made like this was Jewelry Bowls. I personally wear long, dangly, colorful earrings but they were always getting tangled up. I tried jewelry organizers but once I saw the Earring Bowl I was hooked So I made one for myself, and then I made more because they looked really cool. Next were Yarn Bowls. I can not remember how I was introduced to these cool bowl because I am not a knitter or crocheter but I knew they would be a really neat thing to make and for people to use. So I made them and continue to make them! One day a gal walked in and started talking about Butter Bells. I did not want to use Margarine anymore and butter was always too hard to use. I thought the idea crazy, but I made one and fell in love. You never know what new, unique and useful thing I might make. Stay Tuned.... the fun has just begun!
My artistic purpose is to make functional pieces that can be used and enjoyed by everyone. I really love finding unusual things to make that you won't usually find at a big box store but are entirely useful and something that makes life easier and prettier. All my pottery is made in my studio located in SE Oklahoma. I use two different colors of clay which will depend on the final glaze for the piece. One clay is a lovely white stoneware porcelain that I use when I want to glaze is bright, vivid colors. The other clay fires out to a buff color which works beautifully under my browns, greens, and blue to produce a rustic surface. My pottery is made entirely by me, from start to finish. I love the feel of the wet clay between my hands as I lovingly form the piece. Once dry the piece is fired once, glazed and then fired again. Unless otherwise noted, the glazes are food safe and non-toxic. Go ahead and throw it in the microwave and dishwasher too!!
