A little-known war in Yemen that had Saudis and Israelis on the same side

Dana Adams Schmidt was a correspondent for the New York Times. He was one of the first modern Western journalists to visit the Yemen, in the 1950s, including Ma'arib where the biblical Queen of Sheba had her kingdom beside a large lake, making her living by taxing the caravans that passed through. Schmidt's old book, "Yemen: the Unknown War" describes the country, its history, and Nasser's war quite vividly. It is a good complement to "The War That Never Was", by Duff Hart-Davis, which tells the story of Britain's secret and illegal intervention in that war, with both Israeli and Saudi support, against the Egyptian army. Nasser came to deeply regret the war and extricated Egypt after a lot of pain and difficulty. This important historical experience is completely unknown to most Americans - whether citizens or politicians. We're there now, intervening. These two books reveal the roots of Yemen's troubles in factual, completely non-ideological renderings. Fascinating takes on the upheavals that marked the end of Colonialism - we are now, finally, half a century later, in the end-game of that.

The unknown war in the corner of the Arabian peninsula.

Mr.Schmidt sheds some light on an unknown war pitting the newly enthroned Iman al Badr against General Sallal. The Iman had the best intentions of reforming Yemeni society and even admired President Nasser of Egypt. General Sallal, the opportunist seized power with the help of massive Egyptian manpower and resources. The royalists fought back, with the help of the Saudi King. The civil war ends after this book was published, so the reader does not know the outcome of this civil war.
The book details a little known war on the Arabian peninsula. Few people have heard of this war. What is known is that Nasser waged aggressive war against a poorer nation simply to put his stooges into a position of control. Kind of makes Nasser's actions in the Suez Crisis look like the hypocrite he was. For those of you needing a dose of Arab politics, this book show the double dealing nature of the Middle East.
