Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories is a picture book collection of three stories by Dr. Seuss that was published in 1958. "Yertle the Turtle" is the first story in the book. It's the story of Yertle the Turtle, who's king of the pond. When Yertle decided his domain wasn't large enough, he ordered the other turtles to stack themselves up so he could sit on top of them as his throne, declaring that he would rule all that he could see. But his ambition grew beyond the other turtles' ability to support him, and he became oblivious to the turtles' suffering under the heavy load. There's a moral there about hubris and caring for others. (On a historical note, Seuss once stated that the character Yertle represented Adolf Hitler, with Yertle's despotic rule of the pond and takeover of the surrounding area.)

I've reviewed several of the Dr. Seuss interactive children's books developed by Oceanhouse Media, and they've all been very well done. Oceanhouse has done a fine job of creating interactive books that hold kids' attention with their sound effects, illustrations, and interactive features. The app actually enhances the original printed book, since even a child who hasn't learned to read yet can enjoy the story while learning simple vocabulary words.

The story can be read in any of three modes:
1. Read the book yourself, swiping pages when you're ready for the next page.
2. Let a narrator read the book aloud, with you swiping the pages when you're ready for the next page.
3. Auto-Play. Same as #2, but the pages turn automatically.

In any mode, touching an object causes the name of the object to appear with an audio pronunciation of the word. Likewise touching a word causes the word to be pronounced.

Yertle the Turtle is still in print in both paper and ebook versions, but in my opinion the app is just as effective as a learning experience, and it's even more fun with its sound effects and interactive features.

If you are not familiar with Yertle the Turtle, it is perhaps one of the best Seuss books out there. Yertle is a tyrant in Sala-ma-sond, obsessed with owning all he can see. Yertle uses his underling turtles for a throne to make himself more powerful, yet the little turtle Mack does a little thing to knock the nagging King off his high horse. The story is a subtle way to teach kids about community, respect and basic human rights.

So now for the application - works well, compliments and augments the experience. And for much less than the hardcover book you can have King Yertle on your tablet or phone for your little one's viewing pleasure. I am a big fan since my kids can identify these apps as stories and can use my tablet to access whichever story they want.

These story book apps are wonderful for several reasons:
More portable than LeapFrog, a lot cheaper per title.
No ripped or bent pages to worry about.
The story is read to the child and reinforces reading through interactive touch.
More advanced readers can choose to read without help.

Hopefully the trend of bringing these books to tablets will continue and expand. My kids also love Leo the Lightning Bug and One Fish, Two Fish. My tablet is the Acer A500 and these apps work and appear well.

My granddaughters have moved a thousand miles away from us, and I was able to read this to them for the first time last evening. They really liked it. I plan to get Skype set up soon so that I can show them the really cute art work that goes with it. That will make it even better.

I never had any book from Dr. Seuss growing up especially since I grew up in a different country, but I have heard a lot about all these books and I wanted my son to experience them.
And this is one of the many books by Dr. Seuss that I purchased to read to him and we both enjoy this story.
I like the story line, the rhyming, and the lessons being learned.
This app is great for my toddler because he can read it by himself, be read to him by me or by the book.
You can click on the word and it will say what word it is, perfect if you are trying to read.
You can choose auto play or you can manually turn the pages yourself.
I think this app is great and helps my child to love and learn about books and stories.
Teaches them lessons as well.

Obviously it's a classic book and I knew the content wouldn't disappoint. :) I bought this for my 1st grader to practice her reading. She loves it. It is just interactive enough to make it interesting without distracting from the point. It is a book not a video game.

My 4 year old loves the Yertle the Turtle App. He enjoys listening to the story being told to him with the ability to touch the screen and have items identified that he sees. I love this App because my six year old can read the story at his own pace and touch words that he doesn't know to have them identified. Highly recommend all Dr. Seuss App's.

This app upholds the standards of excellence that we've come to expect from OM. The colors are vibrant, the animation scrolling is smooth, and the voice acting is top-notch, even if Yertle sounds a little too much like the rabbit from "The Big Brag." I thought the subject matter might be a little too heavy for my 4 year old, but the treatment here gets the serious point across about excess and abuse of power while still being fun and entertaining.

On a side note, I want to thank the reviewing community on Amazon for all of the feedback on these apps. My wife and I love the Ocenhouse Media apps for our 4 year old, but they can be quite pricey. Your reviews help us in deciding which ones to get and which ones to pass. Such was the case with Yertle. This is one Seuss that evaded me in my younger years. I knew the story but had never read the book, so I had to rely on your reviews to help. I'm even teaching my daughter to look at the stars to help us make decisions!
