That said, the book certainly has its charms. All of the best characters from "The Neddiad" appear here and wander around in the first half. Once things pick up action and plot-wise at the half-way point the book becomes much more engaging, although the Big Audrey who appears at the end of this book is much less interesting than the Big Audrey who anchors book three.
And in any event, there are a lot of very funny set pieces throughout the book and some pretty fun throwaway lines. There are also many very sly allusions to other books, fairy tales, and other cultural icons, especially toward the ending.
So, if you like Pinkwater, this will certainly satisfy even if it isn't a raving success. If you are new to Pinkwater I'm not sure this is the place to start, although, again, you could do worse. I would strongly recommend you try to find "The Neddiad", which has always struck me as the most inspired of the books, with a particularly appealing light and mischievous touch.
