From a laymen's perspective, this documentary serves as an important archive that encapsules an historical view of pre-WWII Jewish life in Eastern Europe. The eyewitness interviews are often colorful and informative, and the homemade film clips and photographs serve as a reminder of the rich Jewish heritage that was once prevalent in this region. For someone like me, who knew next to nothing about the Yiddish language, or the specific roles of men, women, boys, and girls in Jewish culture, this documentary was a decent educational source. Recruiting Elliot Gould for the voice over narration was also a nice touch.

Being a religious Jew, I would have liked to see more about how Judaism was the nucleus of shetle life. That part was very weak and one sided. It was amazing to see the old pictures of faces gone by and hear their stories. This movie really doesn't tell the whole story of shetle life. It's worth seeing once so rent it don't own it :)

This is a great resource for anyone who was born after WWII to get a better understanding of what people saw, perceived, & why it was so, during the time before "secularization" of the Jewish faith/people. Understanding basic human nature, it becomes clear why & how a self-fulfilling prophesy came about...hopefully one that Time can someday erase & forget out- of-existence/possibility. Amen.

I enjoyed the film. It covers a lot of what I heard of the old country by my parents and grandparents
