On Yo Miles!, guitarist Henry Kaiser and trumpeter Leo Smith revisit the glory days of Miles Davis's mid-'70s electric jazz-fusion experiments. Accompanied by the likes of the Rova Saxophone Quartet, keyboardist John Medeski, and guitarist Elliot Sharp, Kaiser and Smith faithfully revive extended Davis compositions like "Black Satin" and "Theme from Jack Johnson". With a background of pulsing electric bass, percussion, a bustling reed section, and floating organ fills, Leo Smith does an admirable job emulating Miles Davis's distinctive trumpet sound. Kaiser's guitar consistently pushes the ensemble into a realm of heady improvisation, blending hard rock and deep funk influences into ambitious jazz structures. This lengthy double-disc is a fine introduction into the mystical methodology of Miles Davis and his most misunderstood musical era. --Mitch Myers

Ok! This is I think the third time I buy this. Maybe the fourth. It's brilliant. Some very erudite and heartfelt reviews precede this humble one: Of particular comment is one by some nice guy whose complaint is that this double jewel reminds him of Miles. My humble guess is he never bought a "Beethoven album". Hellooo: Beethoven passed before our modern recording techniques: Until Dr Who or Mr Spock bring us the real thing we have to rely on Ludwig 's written music, and the many interpreters. These guys Wadada and Henry Kaiser do real good: I saw/heard Miles TWICE LIVE. this is more than very good. By the by: Some of real Miles live would set your hair on end... The South Florida Sunrise 1981 on JimiHendrix's birthday was one such. Tell the Miles engineer that I am the guy he met at the end: He had his analog magnetics, and I had mine.
Poor kid: he saw a tiger. Miles does that

I am one of those who love the electric Miles Davis of the 70s, the one who usually despises himself, they do not know what they are lost. Some years ago, guitarist Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith decided to pay tribute to Miles from that period in a really wonderful double CD, essential for lovers of Miles and Wadada. It is pure energy a masterpiece, with musicians of the first rank, it is Miles without Miles. Do not let it happen, thank me. Appalling

Two killer discs. Over priced, but worth it.

Great recording, great musicianship... Wow! Stellar... If only Miles would've had Michael Manring on bass. Fantastic album and worth every cent.

This is hands down the bomb and is still the best Miles electric tribute band to date. Smith and Kaiser were well ahead of the pack. When this came out 11 years ago in 2005, most people (still) had yet to really appreciate Mile's music from this period, let alone interpret it. This is the recording that opened my ears and (like others have said), helped me get a handle on and really hear and appreciate the nuances of the source material. It was after Yo Miles that I finally "got" On the Corner, Agharta, Pangaea... and understood their brilliance so much more. I also can't say enough about the recording itself -- the clarity. It's a trip on headphones. Along w/ Smith and Kaiser, a key contributor is Michael Manring, who can hold the low end bottom line funk in place, but is also endlessly inventive within the structure. Check out Manring's crazy, wild, distorted and brilliant contribution during the epic version of Ife, which, for me, at 33 amazing minutes, is the not only the highlight of the set, but also the best, most exciting version of this tune by anyone, including Miles band.
To that point -- Keith Jarrett once said that when Miles started to go electric, he "traded knowledge" for a certain sound he was after. I take nothing away from Miles 1975 band (I love that band), but I listen to this and wonder what Miles could have done if he'd come out of retirement in 1980 with players like Manring, Kaiser, drummer Lukas Ligeti and others that were this knowledgeable (or knowledgeable about the avant-garde elements in Mile's music in this way) and so inventive with the spirit of his electric music.

I still remember the time I first heard `Bitches Brew' by Miles Davis. It had as dramatic an impact on my jazz music sensibilities as Sonic Youth's `Daydream Nation' did for rock - nothing would ever be the same again. Since then I have been meticulously collecting Miles' electric era recordings up until his 1975 retirement phase, each one providing yet further revelations- this man and his collaborators really were charting new territory, and so what if he annoyed old-fashioned jazzers in the process? With the release of tribute projects such as Bill Laswell's `Panthalassa', and the homage paid by former Miles' band members in the guise of `Children On The Corner', us electro-Miles junkies can still get our fix. So my belated discovery of Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith's Yo Miles! project has been a source of great joy. And this is only the first of a series of three (the other two being `Sky Garden', and `Upriver'). Kaiser and Smith do Miles a great honour, convincingly recreating the complex grooves Miles and his band were pioneering in the early 70s. On this first double CD we are treated to fine renditions of such greats as `Black Satin' (from 1972's `On The Corner'), `Moja' (from `Dark Magus') and `Ife' (from `Big Fun'). It works as a complement to, rather than a substitute for the original material. Absolutely brilliant!

We are the lost souls in endless pursuit of electric Miles. We have the Jack Johnson, Cellar Door and On the Corner session Cds and they satisfy so much, but we want more. Herbie Hancock Mwandishi band helps, Eddie Henderson Inside Out, Les McCann Invitation to Openesss. And now Yo Miles hits the spot. An immaculate Calypso Frelimo and so much more.. No-one can quite do Michael Henderson bass, but Wadada Smith trumpet is the business... yes, we love it!
