Now, years later I am reading Nouwen; I can feel the kindness and gentleness of his personality, and I love him for it. Christian men are often quite good at spouting dogmatic truths that cease to be true simply because of their hard, violent dogmatism. As I discovered in the pages of You Are The Beloved, Nouwen embodies the Christ-likeness that is increasingly difficult to find – kindness.
Henri Nouwen writes in a way that extends hands that have suffered, hands that make you feel distinctly as if you are accepted. I’m not sure I know of another author who could write so convincingly that I am the beloved. I also don’t think I could believe someone on the topic of Christ’s acceptance of us who hadn’t suffered with loneliness, depression, and self-rejection.
This collection of daily meditations was compiled and edited by Gabrielle Earnshaw. She did a beautiful job selecting passages of Nouwen’s works. The book is divided into months from January to December, and there is a reading for each day.
This beautifully presented hardback devotional is worth your time, and rather than being filled with trite Christian platitudes, You Are The Beloved almost glows with gently illuminating words.
Blogging for Books graciously provided me with a copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own.
Nouwen struggled with loneliness and anxiety all of his life leading him to choose to spend at least part of the day in solitude with God. The result was a discovery that he was and we are the Beloved of God.
Each day's selection gives us an opportunity to learn about our identity in Christ and a chance to spend time in solitude with God leading to our own discoveries. Some are very short, but none are longer than one page. This is definitely on my reading list for my quiet time in 2018.
If you know someone who struggles with anxiety, this would make a perfect Christmas gift.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Blogging for Books, as part of Waterbrook Multnomah’s Book Review Blogger Program. I was not required to write a review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”
I have browsed randomly through many of the entries and each one touched me in some way. The readings are brief, but not without deep content. A simple line or two from one of the readings says, “The resurrection does not solve our problems about dying and death…. But it does reveal to us that, in deed, love is stronger than death.” (104).
I am glad to have discovered this book and intend to use regularly. I recommend it to you as well. It does contain a list of works cited at the end with the information listed by day that a person needs to track the excerpt. Sort of a standard, but still nice to have in case the reader wants more from a work.
I received this book from the publisher in return for a review.
