In her search for acceptance among peers, she reflects becoming the recipient of cruel jokes and rude comments. In a defeated state, and struggling with eating disorders, she states "Although I believed God when I read in His word that He loved me and He created me, somewhere deep inside I clung onto the lie that God had made a mistake. " In the past she would allow rude comments about her and assume she was a failure in ministry and life.
In this book, she will help the reader overcome areas of defeat. Spencer candidly states that we should not try to make God line up with our opinions of who we think He should be. She shares her mistake of accepting criticism against her without testing them according to God's word. Just because someone is a Christian, she shares, does not mean that their opinions are more important than what the Bible says.
The reader will better understand what true humility is and how pride manifests in many ways including low self-esteem. There are questions she presents that you can ask yourself to determine if you have pride.
If you have suffered from body image problems or have insecurities whereby you look for validation from others, this is a book for you. Kristen Spencer knows that insecurities happen when we question God's creation. Though people might have let you down, and were not there for you, she will exhort you to be the one to invite your Heavenly Father into situations in your life. There, she believes, you will learn to invoke peace from hurts and unrealistic expectations of others by forgiving fully.
Kristen and her husband specialize in discipleship and counseling and I recommend this book because of its quality content. Kristen Spencer has been in full-time ministry with her husband as a missionary in Europe for four years. A native of Torrance California, they have three young children. She holds a bachelors degree in comparative world literature from California State University, Long Beach.
In You Aren’t Worthless, Kristin Spencer addresses the almost universal quest for self-worth, self-confidence, or self-esteem. She explains what the Bible has to say and points out where cultural teaching, even within the church, does not line up with the Word of God.
The author explains that low self-esteem is really a manifestation of pride. Instead of tackling our low self-esteem, she builds a case for developing honest humility (not false humility) and godly confidence.
The book provided some well-thought-out points and the author wasn’t afraid to state the truth, even if it might not be popular. It’s worth a read, especially for anyone who struggles with feeling worthless.
In the following chapters, Kristen exposes the lies of the world system that trap women and make them miss the confidence that should come from being Divine image bearers--created to display God’s glory. Throughout the rest of the book, she teaches Scriptural truths that bring healing and help foster godly confidence. She lovingly challenges her readers, “Either you can choose to believe what God has written in the Bible about His love for you, or you can choose the wide path full of miserable and deceived company.” Like a shepherdess fighting off the enemy, her pastoral heart can clearly be seen in each chapter. Consider the following quote:
“When you attain godly confidence, the way you behave and interact with others will change significantly. When you trust God, and believe that His love is what makes you special and beautiful, you do not need human love to make you feel valuable. Remember that no other person can love you the way that God does. If you expect others to fulfill your need to be loved, you place an impossible expectation on them. Once you remove this expectation, your relationship will improve dramatically.”
These types of exhortations are offered throughout the book. Though targeting women, men can gain from this book as well. It will help them to understand some of the strongholds women suffer from, to empathize with them, and to not unintentionally promote worldly lies. It will also unfold any deceptions or ungodly expectations they may hold. I highly recommend this book for women to read devotionally and for discussion in lady’s small groups. Thank you, Kristen, for such a relevant and useful resource!
