You Call That Art?! first provides an overview of sculpture from prehistory until the late 19th century, then gives readers a look at ten 20th-century artists who helped define modern sculpture. Included in the book are Auguste Rodin, Constantin Brancusi, Pablo Picasso, Naum Gabo, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Jean Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Louise Nevelson, and Lygia Clark. Carter and Diaz then invite readers to create their very own modern masterpieces. The book includes die-cut pieces that can be assembled (and reassembled) in any way the reader chooses. Gr 7 Up—Here's a title that is what it's about—a book about sculpture that is also a sculptural work in itself. The pages of the book are set directly into the left-hand side, and the text opens with a brief history of sculpture from its prehistoric beginnings, then discusses 10 modern sculptors, including Auguste Rodin, Louise Nevelson, Pablo Picasso, and Alexander Calder. The right-hand side contains an envelope filled with 10 sets of cardboard die-cut pieces that readers may use, guided by accompanying instructions, to assemble six "planned" sculptures designed by the authors; there are also additional pieces for readers' individual creations. While the reading level is geared to older middle school students and higher, those without knowledge of sculpture may find some of the reading rough going, as there are some sophisticated concepts here. Some definitions in context seem confusing, and not all terms are defined in the glossary. The explanation of the term monochromatic is also misleading, as it's defined as "all black or all white." The authors helpfully mention where works by each artist may be seen, but they neglect to include some of the artwork that they cite. The title's packaging also does it a disservice. The unremovable book and inclusion of the punch-out pieces preclude general purchase for public or school libraries. Another problem is the deceptive appearance of the book: the cover, the format, and even the perky title set in a large font suggest the work is skewed to a much younger audience. In a school setting, this title would work best as a purchase for individual art classes as a reference resource, provided that the cardboard sculptures will be disassembled, placed back in the envelope, and reused by other budding student-artists.—Carol Goldman, Queens Library, NY

NOT just for children any more.

I bought this as a birthday gift for my mother-in-law. It's essentaily a book of 3-D puzzles, and the puzzles -- the sculptures -- are great fun to put together. The textual 'book' that comes with the package is too superficial for grown-ups, but making cardboard 'come to life' is good fun for any age. We had a delightful afternoon putting the puzzles together. (We are ages 66 and 88, respectively.)

This cardboard sculpture kit is the kind of activity that one could bring to a friend's hospital bed, to while away some time. The sculpture-building process doesn't take much horizontal space (unlike big jigsaws) and because most of the sculptures take under a half hour to build, there's virtually instant gratification.

As an activity, this is better than playing cards: you and a friend punch out the cardboard forms, figure out the diagrams (not always easy, which is part of the fun), and construct the sculptures, all while chatting and having coffee or a drink... and when we were done my mother in law had a bunch of whimsical scuilptural forms with which to amuse her friends

This brief history of modern sculpture is fascinating for both adults and kids. But what really sets this apart are the ready-to-assemble cut out sculptures. This adult spent a totally engrossing 2 hours creating some really cool pieces that are now on display all over the house. Highly recommended as a way to broaden your horizons and release your inner child at the same time!
