If you are looking for self help books about creating a better life or cultivating a better outlook, there are many books I'd recommend - I would not recommend this book as it's not very instructional nor inspiring unless you are interested in how Louise Hay triumphed over obstacles and helped to define and establish the self help/affirmation movement.
There are affirmations in this book, but you might be better off buying I Can Do It affirmation cards by Louise Hay.
Some books I'd recommend if you are looking more for an instructional book in creating an exceptional life:
Taking the Leap: Freeing Ourselves from Old Habits and Fears
The Power of Intention
Think and Grow Rich - Think and Grow Rich is such a timeless classic!
If you are a Louise Hay fan or a Cheryl Richardson fan, I think this would probably be a 5 star book for you - but like I said, if you're at a place in your life where you're really looking for some real guidance, I think there are far better inspirational books on the market.
Full disclosure, I am a big fan of each of the co-authors. Louise Hay is an extraordinary lady whose leadership in the personal development world and in the business world (she is the founder and matriarch of Hay House which is such a force for good in this world) has long been a role model for me. Cheryl Richardson is equally extraordinary, having been instrumental in the development of the coaching world as we know it today. Cheryl is also a great questioner (one of many reasons she was such a standout when she did personal coaching) and a superb storyteller, two strengths she used well in creating this delightful inquiry into the philosophies and attitudes that have shaped Louise's life.
In an era where so many authors (and speakers) seem to feel they need to be in our face to effect change, I found the compassionate tone of this book to be a welcome relief. The book is written in a style where one feels that two good friends graced us with a chance to hear their private reminiscing of lives well lived. Not always easy lives, but - nevertheless - lives well lived.
But, it is the wisdom in the book that I most appreciate. Long time fans of Louise will quickly recognize the consistency to her other writings about her strong belief that we are masters of our destiny... that our thinking shapes our world.Read more ›
Although Louise says she has talked about her life story in her other books and won't go there in this book, she pretty much repeats everything else. Her whole start into the self help world, working with the Church of Religious Science, etc is all repeated in this book and was not new to me.
The description says this book is a "conversation" between the two, but it's more like Cheryl is asking Louise questions, quoting her answers, and then writing her own thoughts in the book. It is also really annoying that Cheryl would ask her a question as if she doesn't know the answer, then Louise will answer and Cheryl will say something about how she's been doing the same thing for years. So it's obviously not much of a "conversation." I don't think the book was put together very well at all in that sense. I got the feeling that they just had the idea for this book because they were running out of ideas or something, and it didn't turn out to be anything spectacular.
Other than those things, I found the book to be very positive and uplifting. It had quite a few affirmations you can use in various situations. Although sometimes I felt like I couldn't relate to them, they are people that I look up to because of their positive outlook on life and getting through the tough times.Read more ›
