About the Author
REBECCA STREET is a NY based actor and the mother of two children. She is also an incest survivor. In an effort to help other survivors, she spent a decade researching child abuse and adult sexual assault for her book, You Can Help: A Guide for Family and Friends of Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Assault. She has addressed both lay people and professionals, including the New York State Office of Mental Health, on the ramifications of sexual trauma and methods for facilitating recovery. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the author, herself a victim of incest, describes her trauma with calm words and thoughts. There is clear intent to not traumatize the reader. Through several short chapters, she patiently coaches the reader with topics such as “Permission to Talk,” “The Power of Praise,” “PST and the Long Haul” and more. There is much to learn in these sixty pages.
The second part records the stories of 19 survivors. When you read them, you will note that the author spent a lengthy amount of time finding and selecting representative individuals. They come from various professions and circumstances. Their abuse and assault differ. Their recovery follows some similar threads. All of the stories help to reinforce the theme – You can Help - of this instructive book.
As a member of the clergy for more than forty years, I recommend this book to readers of all ages and of all professions. This is not a religious book, but many of you will hear the author’s own spirit and faith as she lovingly seeks to lift from the ashes lives that have been seriously injured. It is a tender book and it achieves its purpose. The statistics suggest that all of us have or will at some time in our lives need to understand how to respond. You may wish to read this book and be ready.

Ms. Street’s book is beautifully organized and well thought out. It balances experiential insight with significant research and statistical knowledge. It introduces a language, a way of talking, not so much about abuse itself, but about recovery and the path to wholeness. I have tremendous admiration for this loving and informative work! Cynthia Dillon, Ph.D.
I am grateful to be one of the contributors to this effort. I've found it challenging to me personally as I've read through it. The stories of the other survivors, Rebecca's story and the suggestions have given me much to think about.
I'm excited to have such a resource in print. It is unique in my experience.
I highly recommend it.
