Johnny Rodriguez's new sound has arrived with a newness all of its own. In my opinion, his latest sound is fuller, more mature, naturally sincere, and reflective, which makes it all the more meaningful as he sings songs that mirror stories he handpicked to convey all that, he himself, has gone through. I believe his career will have the ripple effect of continued success as long as he stays visible, in the making, and on center stage. Clearly, he has proven himself (paid his dues) with hit after hit and could disappear if that's what he chooses to do, but if he wants to stay in the mainstream and continue to climb than that is an opportunity that is available, as he certainly is as good, if not better, as the rest. Mr. Rodriguez is very good at capturing human nature's essence of failures/successes; man's heartache, misery, and love; all the makings of great country music songs. He speaks and sings the common language of love in all its dimensions. The songs on this CD bring out feelings/thoughts that anyone can relate to such as lonliness, ambition/success, happiness, and heartache. The catalyst manner in which he plays ballards and "dance kicking" music gives a nice flavor to sing and dance to. I enjoyed the CD, "You Can Say That Again." I particularly liked, "Corpus Christi Bay" and the real to life identity Mr. Rodriguez associates with it. In addition, I thought it was a special touch in recognizing and giving special thanks to his mother, Isabel, and brothers and sisters. How could you not admire and respect this talented artist who unquestionably, still has what it takes.

... so I guess that makes this incredible album timeless. What a great record! I played two CDs today, the new George Jones release ("Hits I Missed...And One I Didn't") and Johnny Rodriguez "You Can Say That Again," and you know what? I can honestly say that I believe that country music can still be great. And that in spite of all the sanctimonious empty hat Burger King cowboy rubbish that comes out of Nashville these days. Go for this one, brave traveller. Your heart will sing and you'll find yourself once again completely loving life.

I was amazed to discover that no one else had reviewed this flawless CD. Reviews are fundamentally about comparisons and putting artists and their work in context I guess...so, does it help to say that this is country with a Mexican flavour that sits with my CDs by Dwight Yoakam, Heather Myles, George Ducas, Willie, Ricky Skaggs, plus all the Merles and Hanks etc? Its great in the mornings - the first song "Big Red Sun Blues" shows he knows the importance of beginnings and endings in songs (you know - the opening chords grab you and you start hummimg before you remember the song...). "Corpus Christi Bay" is my favourite, just a great melody and chorus about another life spent drinking too much. However, like Hank Snr. hits compilations, there are no bad or even weak songs - oh, its also really good for drinking whisky to (malt, none of that sweet American bourbon). This is the best honky tonk flavoured CD of the 1990s, and certainly the most played in our house. Hey, when's he coming to New Zealand?

Not as many country music fans recognize the JR name or songs like they would Merle Haggard or Johnny Cash but this man has some really nice music. I was a DJ at a country music station in Ohio and I had a an all night shift and many times after playing a JR song somebody would call wondering who it was I just played. It's really good stuff and his voice grows on you. I recommend it highly.

This 1996 release--significantly, on a prestigious indie label--is Rodriguez' most committed, mature work ever. Co-produced by Jerry Kennedy (architect of the JR hits at Mercury) and Roy Dea, the Nashville session includes Kennedy and Pete Wade on guitars and Hargus "Pig" Robbins on piano. Rodriguez, less frenetic than usual, relaxes a little but also stretches his limits and pushes the envelope in a more challenging tracklist. Every cut here is a keeper, but special highlights are the catchy "Red sun blues," "Corpus Christi Bay" (JR's version outstrips its composer's, Robert Earl Keen), "There's still a lot of love in San Antone" (JR almost, not quite, outstrips Darrell McCall), "Mexico rain" and especially "When it's your turn to fall." Diehard fans and groupies will be dismayed at the absence of commercial chart hits, but the focus here is artistic excellence and authenticity, not achieving more airplay. Rodriguez became a much purer artist with this release.
