Emerald Aonghusa did a brilliant job of really showcasing what life is like for someone returning home to their friends after being away for so long. Michelle simply expected that she'd just slot right back into life with her best friends as if she'd never been away. Life's not like that. Nor are friendships. With you gone, dynamics change, life for your friends evolves and moves on without you in it. And there is an adjustment you need to make when you re-enter their lives.
What I loved so much about this story besides the romance with the lovely Alex, was the portrait Emerald provided through Michelle (MC) of screwing up as a friend, and the ugliness of having that mirror shoved in your face, reflecting all the flaws you never realised were there. The awkwardness of trying to be a better person and reforge friendships.
AND then there was ALEX! The guy couldn't be any sweeter, and he had his own secret, and one he feared would be a deal-breaker with Michelle. I was so invested in trying to guess what it was!
If you're looking for a quick read full of the bumps of navigating adulthood with friends, and a sweet romance, you'll enjoy this book.
Centred in the realities of change and how we choose to respond to that, this is a story I believe many could resonate, and feel a connection, with. After a year away, Michelle returns home expecting that all will be as it was before, but is instead met with the, at times, harsh reality that life moves on even if you’re not there to live it. Thankfully the delicate—and sometimes blunt—truths provided by her friends, and new boyfriend, Alex, sees rifts mended and friendships strengthened.
Aonghusa has done a great job in delivering on characters that are likeable and speak on the truths we’ve all experienced, or will experience at some point. The combination of wit and friendly banter, sweet endearments, and those difficult conversations that need to be had made for a lovely page-turner with a message to boot. Not to mention, the way your heart aches, then flourishes once more, at a certain truth revealed about Michelle’s new boyfriend.
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thankfully, her group of friends and SWEET AS PIE boyfriend, Alex, help her through it and come out on the other side. The core of characters are so likable and fun to read; you wish they were your friends! There's even a little bit of mystery going on until the end to keep you turning those pages!
Hats off to Emerald for writing such a sweet novella!
