I love this human. Sherman Alexie gets to the essence of the human experience. The reservation is of course just one part of this bittersweet life that we humans experience. Acceptance is the universal experience and he tells it so well. The ways in which we fail as parents, children, siblings, classmates. Finally it comes to one thing. Forgiving for living.

I'm not a big fan of poetry and, at times, found it interruptive. But this memoir is so fascinating and his life so downright intriguing, I was not swayed from reading it. Anyone who has searched his/her soul in as retrospective manner should read this book. Any young person who is questioning their self-worth should read this book. Anyone who finds pleasure in belittling others should read this book. And, anyone who enjoys Mr. Alexie's writing should read this book!!

Sad, funny, introspective, authentic. So Human. Impossible not to get caught up in the prose, the poetry and his unique style. Loved it. One of those books that will not soon be forgotten. Highly recommended.

As an indigenous person who has always struggled with their mother, this book caught me off guard and brought up emotions I had spent a lot of effort burying. The second overarching theme was dealing with feelings of inadequacy, not being ndn enough, not being traditional enough. These parts of the book told me, "we're never going to be untouched by western culture," and that as long as we're all doing our honest part as indigenous people, we all have a place in the community. I spent most of the book laughing through tears (unsurprising when it comes to an Alexie book.)

Why didn't the kindle edition include the family photos advertised as part of this book? I loved the book but feel cheated. Alexie Sherman's stirring poems, essays, and narrative leave no stone unturned regarding his relationship with his mother. Be prepared for a roller coaster ride as you read this. It's heartbreaking, funny, sad, and enlightening, especially with regard to the plight of our Native Americans.

I highly recommend everyone living or visiting North America read Sherman Alexie. He is a sensitive and generous soul. Or, listen to his radio interview with Terry Gross.

An ode to mother and a requiem for the pain from all the travesties that converged for this one human. He spoke to me. He is honest and real and he and his family live because he wrote this book. May we all heal someday.
