When I heard about Dona, I stumbled across one of her books with the memorable and curious title of “You Had Me At ‘Hello, World.’” I didn’t really know what to expect, so I dived right into reading it.

If you identify as a hustler, change maker, or someone who is curious and always seeking out different ways to approach their career, this is your book. The way she writes, you feel like you can connect with her through the pages and that she gets it - she gets you, she gets where you’re at in your career, and she wants to help in any way that she can - everything from building relationships to getting feedback to building confidence in yourself and you skills. Dona offers up a generous amount of insight from leaders across the tech industry, including relatable anecdotes from her own experiences. She tells it like it is. The most meaningful part of this book is that you can tell she invested time into seeking out different perspectives and is willing to invest into us.

For me, as a person who fast-tracked to a leadership role, when reading this book, it led to a profound moment in me asking myself - Am I owning my career? No matter where you are at in your career, this book was a positive reminder that there is always room to grow. Dona’s book definitely has me thinking about not only the different ways I can approach my career, importantly, she has me thinking about how I can help others with theirs.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to grow their career or is looking to find that energy and motivation to get out there and own it.

I like books for one of two reasons. The author must have something worth saying and the author has to say it well. I am happy to report that Dona Sarkar has a great deal to say and all of it is really important. She can also write really well.

At first I thought this was going to be a female take on something like Career Superpowers but it goes far beyond that and by the end I became convinced that as good as this book is for female readers, it should be required for male readers. In a work place that is increasingly becoming more diverse this is an interesting view inside the mind of a successful woman and her viewpoints will help men navigate the world we now live in.

In particular her discussion of EQ is almost painfully good. I am well aware that this is something I myself struggle with and she has a lot of wisdom to share. No spoilers, just read this section carefully, especially if you are male!

My own books on careers are mostly first person accounts and a view as a mentor. Her take is a viewpoint of a mentee which makes this really unique. If there is one complaint she has almost too much deference to her mentors but I suppose she's been picky about who she chooses to listen to. It would have been fascinating to know what mentors were left on the cutting room floor and why.

You are going to learn things that will help your career and you are going to enjoy learning them. This book is helpful and engaging. I study career matters and still learned a lot in this book. It belongs in every successful person's collection.

I’ve been in the Software Development game for a long time and have had the privilege of working on cool projects, shipping often and, most importantly, interacting with smart, generous people. Although I am at Microsoft, I have not yet had the opportunity to meet Dona in person but I’m grateful Dona undertook this book and shared it with all of us.

If I could some up the impression you get on reading this book it would be “Authentic Energy”. It turns out that energy is contagious and the book will leave you refreshed with tons of ideas and tweaks you can use in your own career. Think of it as a compilation of recipes crafted by expert cooks – the cooks in this case being the numerous leaders Dona interviewed for the book as well as Dona’s own experiences.
I’ve been a manager, an individual contributor, a startup founder and everything in between. I’ll keep this gem on my exclusive shelf of career references and will return for a shot of energy whenever the need arises. During my business career I have read as many motivational books as I could find. In my opinion Dona's is in the thick of this genre and should be read by anybody from graduating student to those seeking new careers to those who, upon retirement, are repurposing their lives into consulting or nonprofit volunteerism . As a male retiree I find the book, though written for females, gender neutral. I would have loved to have had "Hello World" to read when I was making my first career moves. Dona gives sensible examples, both simple and sophisticated, of how one can navigate situations that don't have to be as complicated as we tend to make them. Said simply, it is about dealing with people and making yourself apparent and important to others.

First saw Dona at MS Ignite 2016 (NZ). This is a great book. However I will need to read it again because Dona has mentioned several things that we should be doing and its hard to remember all of it. I will need to come back to it from time to time. I think the reader should make notes as they read the book and then come back to them every week/month to verify if they are actually doing it or not. You will only benefit from the book if you go ahead and actually do the stuff mentioned here. I did make some notes but they are incomplete.
