OK - I knew this was a dark read, knew it was about human trafficking, and I knew it would be a complex romantic read. I spurred myself on during the stomach churning, cring worthy moments with the fact this story is about truth. This stuff does happen! It is a sad fact! I wondered how a romance could blossom from such horrific life happenings.

The evil in this book knows no bounds. I guess because I was so connected with Lilly obtaining freedom and justice being served that the romance didn't work for me. I had such angry feelings that it was hard to shift and even like Jake. I was so heartbroken by the story of Lilly and Sash, all the slave girls, and Marco's collection. Their story was enough and the romance just didn't work for me. I did finish the book, but I never connected, nor really liked Jake and Lilly together. At first it seemed Stockholm syndrome like, but then as his story unfolded it seemed like each were just too desperate to be loved. It seemed forced and not a real, honest romance.

This was a hard read for me and I certainly will not read it again. This author writes well, but the story was so dark for me personally. I am glad she wrote the book to bring light to a real problem around the globe. I applaud her for taking on a subject matter and tackling it with such detail, so the reader captures a glimpse into this sick world.
I thank the author for her courage to tackle this subject matter. She really shed light, understanding, and hopefully empathy, sympathy and desired action from her readers to aid in this on going battle.

I give it one star for the subject matter and the realistic writing, one star for the suburb writing style, and one star because I finished it.

Overall Rating: 4.5 Rockin’ ★★★★☆

“Never say never”

Evie Harper’s debut novel, You Loved Me at My Darkest is a fascinating yet horrific journey of two sisters thrown into the unthinkable, demoralizing world of human trafficking. It was brilliantly written, with a thread of violence and romance that is necessary to the plot’s development as well as the secrets held by the main characters. In the beginning I wavered on finishing the book, because I prefer my HEA and tend to stay away from the darker romances. I’m glad I continued and "never gave up" reading because this narrative was extremely different from anything I have ever read before. Your emotions will scatter like leaves in a whirlwind as you read the events the sisters endure. Caution people grab yourself a box of tissues because you will need them and you will cry!

Lily is a beautiful, head-strong heroine taken away from the life she has always known. She struggles daily to survive and only does so because of the love she feels for her sister, Sasha. Both have been kidnapped off the streets of New York City and whisked away to hell on earth with no chance of escaping. There is no one to miss them or to come rescue them.

Jake is an enigma from the beginning. He is enthralled by the innocent, beautiful Lily when he spots her at the airport and follows her around the city for two weeks watching her. He is Marco’s right hand man and will do nothing to jeopardize that position, not for anyone, even Lily. He is detached from his feelings due to the tragedies he experienced in his past, this makes Jake the perfect soldier to work for Marco.

Lily and Sasha learn quickly what their new role in their life with Marco will be and it becomes increasingly harder each day.

4.5 stars for You loved Me At My Darkest which is book one in the You Loved Me series. This book starts with Lily and Sasha - sisters from Australia on a vacation around the globe with the first stop being the iconic New York City. The girls are having a great time and on their last day in the city they are literally snatched off the street. One sister - Lily, draws the attention of the nefarious crime boss and is brought into "The Collection" while the other sister - Sasha, will be sold to the highest bidder at auction.

Lily is whisked away and assigned a guard by the name of Jake once she becomes part of Marco's collection but that doesn't deter her in the least from fighting tooth and nail to find her younger sister. Lily is at the hands of a madman but only cares about keeping her sister safe going so far as being subjected to beatings and rape to ensure that they are reunited. Lily will stop at nothing to prevent Sasha from being sold into a life of sexual slavery furthermore the help of an unlikely ally starts to stir up some feelings she never would expect in her situation.

Jake is part of the cartel the snatches women off the street to be sold into sexual slavery or be kept by his boss Marco to use how he sees fit. The day Lily and Sasha are snatched Jake has a visceral reaction to Lily and the feeling just intensifies once he is assigned as her guard.
