Prime Cuts: Praise Your Way Through, Old Rugged Cross, Yes You Can

Former front man of the Gospel group Commissioned, Marvin Sapp calls himself a preacher who sings. First and foremost, Sapp is a pastor who preaches twice a week for the last 25 years as the senior pastor of Lighthouse Full Life Center Church. As secondary calling, Sapp also sings for the Lord. Yet, when one listens through Sapp's new RCA Inspiration album "You Shall Live," one can't helped but appreciate how his two callings are intricately intertwined. Save for the old hymn "Old Rugged Cross," all the 10 songs here are co-written by Sapp. One listen through these newly crafted paeans make one appreciate the theological depth these songs mine. And just like any sublime preacher would do, Sapp never leaves his songs liming in the abstract. Rather, in each song, Sapp is carefully to take his Biblical-based message and make it palatable to the average lay person making sure that they sing and sting in our hearts with an ingrained passion for the Lord.

"You Shall Live" is Sapp's 10th solo album. It's also his first album in four years. Based on the incendiary response of fans and radio towards the album's lead single "Yes You Can," it doesn't take a prophet to figure out that "You Shall Live" is destined for Billboard Gospel Album chart's penthouse. Following his former #1 albums such as "Thirsty," "Here I Am" and "I Win," "You Shall Live" never lets loose of the lofty standard we have come to expect of Sapp. The album starts off on a propulsive worshipful high as Sapp leads us on the clappy "Greater.

First, let me preface my review by saying the following: When it comes to Marvin Sapp, I am probably one of the most biased people you will ever meet as I am a huge fan. There! I said it. Now, with that said and out of the way... My advice to you, my dear reader is: RUN!!! Don't walk to download You Shall Live. I struggle to say this because I've loved all of his past work as they have gotten me through some very dark times in my life, but I will say it anyway... In my humble opinion, this is his best work to date. It is very uplifting and encouraging (something most people need in their lives today). My favorite song is Yes You Can. The bridge of the song has me hooked: "He said, I can, I know, I will, triumph over the enemy". Another favorite is the Old Rugged Cross. Having grown up in a baptist church who sang old spirituals, listening to this song takes me back to the days when my parents were alive and we sat in church together as family and sang the Old Rugged Cross. Trust me when I tell you, it would be a huge mistake to sleep on (overlook) this one! It very well may be the encouragement and strength you need! I know it was for me!

I Pre-purchased the CD and at the time I received the first three available songs so I kept it on the song "Live". When I first heard the songs I could not release the song Live it literally spoke life unto me. I seen a post this morning from Marvin Sapp and he stated that this CD is for those that chooses to Overcome. That is nothing but the truth. The whole CD is awesome cannot thank him enough for simple being tender to the spirit and bringing forth what is needed.

Marvin Sapp does it again! 3 years after his great album, I Win, he returns with You Shall Live. It's classic Marvin, but with a hint of fresher, more modern sound. There is music for the young'ns and the older grown folk. Overall, a great album. If you like Marvin Sapp, or gospel music in general, you're gonna love it.

I am a Marvin Sapp fan to start with, but this album is great. I was not crazy about the first song, but Live is my favorite. I have it on repeat and play it over and over again. It is really an encouraging album as well as a spiritual up lifter.

Really enjoying the music and ministry of Bishop Marvin Sapp! He's always been one of my favorite artists and singers since his very first solo project and his days with Commissioned. From the opening track to the last Im enjoying the full body of work that he brings to this project. The message is Christ centered and the sound is incredible. Great CD to purchase.

Marvin's back! with continous praise, the songs are moving, uplifting, and timeless! The title track is an inspiration to keep on in the mist of all you may be facing. "Yes you can" may well be the anthem for the young people today, with all they face, cause GOD says Yes! you can ! What more can be said for " The Old Rugged Cross" and "Thank You for the Cross".

I had to listen to it three times before I could decide if I liked it. That's the ONLY reason I didn't give it five stars. That being said...I love it! His testimony, through out the album, really does make me look at how God has been working for (on & in) me.
