From the Author
This book is part of a continuing series to help future space explorers, engineers, and scientists learn key science and math concepts at an early age. Any kid with an interest in space will find this book, and the others in my You Will ___ Space™ series, very fun reads. Younger kids will like the illustrations, older students the math exercises in the back. This particular book spring boards off my very grown-up research on space farms, published in peer reviewed proceedings at various engineering conferences. The bioreactors in this are in use already, just not exactly as described, and the the algae reactor is my own patent pending design. Space farms are what will enable colonies on Mars and the moon, and for space ships and space stations. Space farms let people have green to see, and fresh foods to eat, in addition to cleaning water, and recycling wastes and air. I hope you enjoy this latest entry, and look for more soon!
From the Back Cover
Space Explorers will also be Space Farmers! In this book, one of the You Will ____ Space™ Series, future space engineers will learn all about how farms in space work. How will people grow food, recycle air and water, and use wastes? Inside are ways to grow plants without soil, farm fish and shrimp is small spaces, grow algae in a reactor, and use yeast and bacteria to convert fiber to carbon dioxide for the farm. Readers will learn how animals and fungi convert food and oxygen into growth, energy, and carbon dioxide, and how plants and algae convert carbon dioxide and water into growth and oxygen. Simple experiments anchor key concepts, and advanced readers can explore a couple of related math exercises. Playful illustrations make the book fun for all ages, even lap readers, and adults will learn too. Concepts are tied together to show how the farm can support a growing space habitat, on Mars, the Moon, or anywhere. Read this book and you too, will learn to farm in space.
