Just imagine my utter surprise as I was on Amazon one evening and happened to see a listing for this book. Finally, I said to myself, theres a genuine book devoted to the history and overall production of this amazing television series! I love it. It meticulously details all the five seasons and analyzes each and every single episode! From the 1977 tv pilot to the very last episode, plus anecdotes from cast and crew members (some heartwarming) about their individual experiences working on the Hulk, every one from Lou Ferrigno and the show's producer Kenneth Johnson to Dick Durock (who memorably portrayed the evil Hulk in the excellent two part episode The First) and the stunt men who doubled for Ferrigno. The book starts off discussing the Hulk's comic book origins, details how Universal talked Johnson into doing the series but how he only agreed to do it if he could loosely base the premise off of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables (the righteous fugitive on the run), then run downs all 82 original episodes. Toward the end of the book, we're even treated to the rundown of the proposed She Hulk tv movie that never came to be seen; too bad, it might've been cool. Yet One thing that truly grabbed me while reading this was all the beautiful and even sad stories related to the late Bill Bixby, who as the show's leading man, helped to make sure what we saw every week was the best in dramatic television storytelling and he never settled for less! I wish most of today's tv actors had his discipline and dedication to perfection! Anyone who is a devoted Incredible Hulk fanatic like me owes it to themselves to grab this book!
Patrick A. Jankiewicz wonderfully puts together this 500+ page Hulk bible that's every Hulk fans' personal hand guide to the legend of the Hulk. The book starts off with a nice foreword from the Hulk himself, Lou Ferrigno! It then transitions over to numerous pages telling how the Hulk was born, how thoughts for the classical tv show came about and so much more. Throughout this book, you'll find a lot of rare, never before seen photos as well as biographies on the main characters and stars from episodes, which is a bonus for this companion!
The reader is also treated to a walk-through of the series which gives readers a walk-through of each episode, Banner's alias in that episode, and comments from Lou Ferrigno, Kenneth Johnson, and some of the stars who played on the show. In addition to that we also get a walk-through of the 3 made for tv movies, the cartoon show, and the 2 Hulk films made in 2003 and 2008.
One of my favorite parts about this book is how they mention The Rebirth of The Incredible Hulk, which was a planned film following Death of the Incredible Hulk but didn't happen due to Bixby's death. They also give us a full plot analysis on a She-Hulk pilot movie that involving Bill and Lou but also never happened.
Overall, this is a great book for anyone who is a fan of the Hulk. Patrick doesn't sell this book short of anything and gives the fans everything they could ever dream of. Enjoyable beginning to end, it's hard to put down. As a fan of the show since I was 6 years old, this book definitely tops off my Hulk collection! I even re-watched the entire series from the Pilot to Death, while reading this. Bill Bixby is my idol and to read through chapters of his life on and off screen of the Hulk, his struggles, and overcoming those struggles, it really inspires me even more. If you've been searching high and low for an "Incredible" guide to the Hulk, look no more! You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry is your bible for everything you want to need and know about the show and Hulk's history!
