Very deep and intense book to read but, definitely guides one through the changes of the meaning to non-profit board governance. You will be surprised at what you will learn but it will take time and you might to do a little reading, stop, and pick it up again. This way one will not bored and information overload. This author has tremendous insight as well as educational/clinical experience, along with her other associates.

Disclaimer - I am one of the authors. But I didn't know in advance what very high quality all the articles would be! Despite over twenty years consulting in this field, with lots of professional development, I've picked up a lot of new ideas from this book and will be applying them. Each article both shakes up your thinking and gives very helpful tips for applying the new ideas.

This isn't the standard approach to nonprofit board resources. This is the place to look for creative, new ways of thinking about nonprofit board governance.

Great resource for nonprofit leaders! Best way to use the book is to have a different Board Director read an article and report on its connection to your Board at each Board meeting.

In today's challenging environment the role of the board in strong nonprofits has never been more essential. Having worked with nonprofit boards for more than 25 years I have a great appreciation for the challenges and opportunities faced by board members and by staff.
You and Your Nonprofit Board offers a refreshing and candid look at board management through a prism of essays written by experts and thought leaders from several sectors. I loved getting the perspective and different viewpoints and found the book fascinating and useful. Terrie Temkin has had a phenomenal impact on nonprofit management and with 20 years' experience in the sector understands effective boards.
The book is divided into three parts. The Governance Today section is especially insightful and thought provoking with a focus on the role of the board. It's collection of essays - most are 3 to 5 pages long - offering not only big picture ideas but packed with practical tips and stories from the real world. Part Two is Making it Work. This section is chock full of information about your boards life cycle, recruitment strategies and communication. Lots of good nuts and bolts info here. I loved the A Blue Ribbon Nominating Committee piece. Very informative with a real approach to finding the right people to serve. Finally Part 3 is Myths and Madness - love that title! The Ten Myths about Nonprofit Boards is stimulating and refreshing.
I loved the format of the book - you can easily read it in small doses that fit perfectly in a hectic nonprofit executives schedule. You can also share the pieces that are particularly relevant to you with your own board, staff and colleagues. I plan on using some of the sections as discussion items at my own board's meetings. You and Your Nonprofit Board is a MUST read for any executive director or board member who needs reassurance that building effective boards is tough work but your time and energy is well rewarded and a good board is worth the effort.
