I didn't read this book. I listened to it.
And oh.my.goodness!!! The narrator, Santino Fonata, I think I have a HUGE crush on you.
I didn't think an audio book would make a difference. I like to imagine the voice of the characters as I read. However, this story was an exception. The way this book is written, you WANT to listen to it. It wasn't just a guy reading a book... it was a PERFORMANCE.
You see, the book is written from the point of view of, Joe. It is written like one long soliloquy performed by Joe. He tells his story (obsession) about this girl, Beck. He seems like an ordinary twenty-something single guy on the outside, but he's different. And you soon learn how different he is at the end of chapter one. The prose is a witty, fast-paced depiction of a male stream-of-consciousness. He bounces around from his ordinary real-life conversations, to his maniacal musings about everyone's behaviors, to his often crass, yet intriguingly explicit sexual thoughts.
He is hyper analytical,
yet brilliant that I continued to be drawn to him like a moth to a flame.
His personality was eerily captivating and I wanted to know more. I wanted to know what he would do next. I wanted to know his thoughts, his feelings, his reactions . It was like watching those "Behind the Music" documentaries that unearth the skeletons underneath.
Whether you do end up listening or reading this book.....do it!!!!! Careful, Joe still haunts me.
Lets start! Joe....... he is a wackadoo! You do not want this guy as a stalker! You do not want to get in the way of this guy if you are a threat to the person he is stalking!
He is in love/lust/stalker mode with Beck and she is a weirdo to start. She has a lot of issues with men, sex, her father. Not sex with her father, just her father not loving her. And Joe stalks the crap out of her until he gets her finally to love him.
But.... she finds out all of these creepy things he has been doing. I'm not giving out any spoilers because whoever is reading my review needs to read this book! Now I am all creeped out thinking more about stalkers and what they can actually find out from you so easily.
Joe knows how to work his way into your life. If he gets something of yours then you are toast. He is in!! He is in all of your stuff! He takes hacking and stalking to a whole new level.
I loved this book and hated it too. I can't even explain it. The book is so well written and just freaky that I am at a loss for words. I mean Joe just gets away with so much stuff and it's all legit. Just read it people, seriously. You may not love it because we are not all the same, but it will trip you out. And you will want to smack a few people, but whatever, just read it :)
I can't wait to read the next one!!!!
FYI: You is a darker type story line, but a different type of dark than say This is War, Baby or Captive in the Dark.
While the second person point of view (pov) definitely delivers an intimate and intricate feel, it's one I have never been able to just sink into. And I really wanted to sink into the dark, demented world of all that was Joe Goldberg. In all honesty, I don't think this story would have worked as well in any other pov. Written in this style, second person gave readers first hand insight into the mindset of our male lead that we wouldn't have gotten in say the first or third.
Sadly, due to my dislike of second person, I was never truly able to immerse myself fully into this book. I didn't crave it like I wanted to and instead of devouring our beloved sociopath, I kept putting his story down and walking away from it.You took me almost a month to finish, which is why the four star rating. My struggle, however, is more of a personal issue and has absolutely NOTHING to do with the actual writing ability of this writer.
I can confidently recommend this book as Ms. Kepnes provided readers with an engaging and well developed journey. Ms. Kepnes provided readers with an engaging and well developed book. It was her vivid and rich, expressive detail into the psyche of a true psychotic that had me coming back for more, regardless of my discomfort with the pov. I will be moving on to book two, Hidden Bodies. No way I can stop now, I NEED to find out how everything pans out. Does Joe get caught? Does he fall further into his obsessions? Does he find another mouse to his cat?

I think this was so different since it was from the stalkers POV.Read more
