Having read a lot of Young Avengers stories, as well as individual story arcs from other Marvel teen heroes over the years, I was pleasantly surprised how well the original YA story run held up. These characters enter the Marvel universe fully formed. This is the Young Avenger's definitive story arc. There personalities are right there, jumping off the page, better expressed than in any of the myriad follow up stories.
Kieron Gillen's 2012 Young Avengers run may have have more hype, and Kate Bishop may be better known as Hawkeye these days than as the Young Avenger she started out as, but the original run had a certain something that got lost along the way.
A big part of that is the plotting. The book is full of big twists that turn everything upside down every few issues, but the twists reveal who these characters are, not derail them as happens a bit too frequently in later stories. It's hard to explain, but every time I read another story with these characters, I wish the author would be able to capture their original essence better, their original essence established in this collection of stories.
If you like the Young Avengers, this is their first and their definitive story.
