This is a genuinely important book which provides an enormous amount of material yet the text keeps the reader alert throughout. When most of us have this mirror image of Peter O' Toole as THE Lawrence of Arabia (have to say, armed with so much more information now I am tempted to watch the film again - if I can find it), Anthony Sattin provides us with new and revealing facts on Lawrence that combine to make one realise his early demise really was a huge loss to 20th century civilisation. The writing is balanced, skillful and detailed so whether you are an academic, historian or a pleb like me it will educate and reveal a great deal to you, not only about The Young Lawrence but the entire region.
