A Brilliant Time-Lapse Experiment

Ze Frank has one of the most creative minds on the planet (who else could get hundreds of people to dress up their vacuum cleaners?) "Young Me, Now Me" is a great book of paired photographs one from childhood, and another recreated in adulthood. They tend to be extremely funny, but also very revealing of the human condition. The stories behind each pair is told by one of the subjects, and the emotions spanned are huge; I was surprised how often I was genuinely touched by the sentiments revealed here (especially with the Canady girls on pp. 94-95 and the beautiful photo pair on pp. 18-19 of Bill McKenney's Mom, now suffering from Alzheimer's.) Of course most of the photos are lighthearted reenactments of cherished childhood memories and are considerably upbeat, but the book is much more than a simple photo collection.

The book doesn’t take long to read, but if you're like me you'll leave it sitting around so you can flip open to pages at random; you'll never fail to smile. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the greatest, and with "Young Me, Now Me" Ze Frank hit it out of the park.

Full disclosure - Im IN this book! I've been a fan of Ze Frank's work for years and this is by far my favorite project. As a participant it was so much fun to put the photos together - I chose a shot from my childhood that really summed me up and recreating it was in a way reliving it. It was amazing to be able to honor my mom and her wacky rituals in that way. Needless to say I've ordered her a copy also...The photos are often hilarious and just as often touching - people went to great lengths to put these together! Ze has an uncanny knack for bringing people together online to make emotional art and this is the take home version of that work - buy it! It will inspire you to create your own YMNM photos. Totally worth it!

I've been a fan of Ze Frank for many years and drawn to his amazing humor. I pre-ordered his book as soon as it was announced. This book is one of the many projects where he is trying to engage the world community with fun and emotion. The books is both touching and at times hilariously funny. A must to get. It will also make a wonderful gift inspiring people to go back to their own child hood pictures reconnecting with the people involved in some very special ways.

This is the greatest little book. It's by turns hilarious, poignant, provocative, and amazing. Good to see one of Ze Frank's projects get put into book form -- it's like a slow motion flashmob. It's not so much a book of photos as a document of a performance art happening. Kudos to all involved!
