The key to the program is found in Harry's Rules: Exercise six days a week. Don't eat crap. Connect and commit to others. There are seven rules all together, based on the latest findings in cell physiology, evolutionary biology, anthropology, and experimental psychology. Dr. Lodge explains how and why they work—and Chris Crowley, who is living proof of their effectiveness (skiing better today, for example, than he did twenty years ago), gives the just-as-essential motivation.

Crowley and Lodge rework their bestselling Younger Next Year (which targeted men) to address health and aging concerns for women. Former attorney Crowley's chatty voice alternates with internist-gerontologist Lodge's straightforward medical perspective. The authors promise that major lifestyle changes, including a six-days-a-week exercise regime, and a positive view of aging will make the "next third" of life—the stage after menopause—the most fulfilling. Because women live longer, are highly motivated for change and fear aging less than men do, the authors contend, they will reap great benefits from the program. Crowley and Lodge put their own spin on commonsense health essentials, with Lodge adding information on the latest antiaging breakthroughs. A variety of activities (biking, skiing, sailing, yoga) will likely make the intensive exercise plan more enjoyable. Although there is little new material, women may find the 71-year-old Crowley's cheerleading appealing—the old buddy tone of the previous edition is exchanged for that of a male "girlfriend"—and a great motivator not only for making lifestyle changes but for equating health with how one feels, not how one looks. If you're getting along in years and think that it's ordained that you will decline, lose vitality, and become frail - READ THIS BOOK!! I did, at my cardiologist's suggestion. Changed my life - and my wife's. We're early 60s and getting strong and fit. We're exercising, hiking, doing regular stretching - and loving it. Feel better than we have in a very long time. Everything is easier. Energy is increased. Mental function is better. Fitness is critical as we age. Fitness is freedom. Fitness is dignity. Fitness is fun. We expect to be strong and active at least into our 80s. Unless we get hit by a truck.

I'm a huge fan of Younger Next Year. I've been doing the basic program for six years and it has really changed me for the better. Be warned that this book is mainly repackaged leftovers. If you have read the original, most of the first part will be review. The main message of the exercise program is good, but the "sacred 25" are apparently covered in Thinner Next Year (which I have not read). I also think the exercises seem to be a bit overwhelming. I doubt you could do the "warm ups" in less than 30 minutes, and the whole point of YNY is 45 minutes to 60 minutes of exercise six days a week. The book recommends to mix and match the exercises, and has a few suggested programs. Overall, however, I expected more guidance and a more manageable program. It almost seems like the purpose of the book is to lead to the purchase of the exercise DVD. Not a big deal because the book is cheap. So, overall, good effort. But, I would really have preferred an updated new edition of YNY that includes TNY and a more structured chapter on the exercises. Also, more involvement by Harry. Harry is featured a little here, but it seems largely repackaged.

GREAT BOOK! I loved the original book better though. He got softer when he was speaking directly to women. But honestly I prefer his humor and straight talk. I recommend this book very often. It's a great resource for the latest research on longevity and how to avoid all the modern diseases of inflammation crippling the unhealthy lifestyle of the western world. And it's written with humor and in a way that even the most non health say person could understand. Highly motivating! And bottom line message - You and You alone are RESPONSIBLE for having health or non-health based on the choices you make in everyday life.

No Doctor, drug, surgery/procedure can save you from your own choices. Why not choose health and health for a long life. Its about what you put in your mouth, how often you move your body, building health relationships and being connected to something more real that ones' ego. Wonderful book!!!

I was the person that continually gained and lost the same 10 to 15 pounds over my entire adult life. That is until at age 50, I started lifting heavy weights. Within weeks, I was literally shrinking. I only lost around 10-12#'s but dropped 3 pants sizes. doing nothing but lifting weights. Since then I've done no cardio other than summertime cycling. I eat healthy and feel great and I thought I was "good-to-go". Until I read what this book has to say about the need for BOTH weights AND cardio to maintain health as we grow older. The chapters rotate between physician and patient perspective. It's totally changed my thought process regarding the importance of cardio. Extremely informative and very entertaining writing. I highly recommend you read and follow the advice in this book.

I am a YNY fan. Read, laughed, and applied Chris Crowley and Dr. Henry Lodge's ideas. Even went to the Aspen Club YNY bootcamp in 2014. Great program. Some folks seem miffed that the material in this book is already in the first two books, Younger Next Year and Thinner Next Year. They are correct. The authors say that on the copyright page. If you have read both YNY and TTY, and you bought the videos, you don't need this book...unless, you would like a nice succinct rendition that hits the high points and illustrates the best darn exercise and stretching program you may ever use. I bought myself a copy and now that I have this nifty short action packed book, I am going to buy two more to give away.
It's 5 stars for what it is. Most folks have NOT read both YNY and TTY. I am going to give the first book away to my adult son, whose doctor just told him to get off his duff and do some exercise. This is the book for him...and may you too!

I received this book as a gift from a friend two years ago and reading it completely changed my life. What struck me was the commonsense approach to getting fit with the simple, underlying message: Be active for 45 to 60 minutes a day, 6 times a week. It didn't matter what the "exercise" was; it only mattered that I was getting my heart rate up above 65-70% of max. I could do that with a brisk walk. So based on what I read, I got a tracker with a heart rate monitor (no, not the most accurate, but enough to give me a general idea of my heart rate) and started walking. Then I built up to hiking in the hills close to my home. And now I'm doing activities like golf and skiing that I had all but lost hope of doing on a regular basis. Thus far, I've lost over 120 pounds having adopted the philosophy presented in this book, and I'm still going. This is a book that I highly recommend to anyone. While it's geared to the 50+ age group, even young people can benefit from it. In fact, I shared this book with my kids' pediatrician because she saw the marked change in my appearance, and wanted to find out more to help with managing childhood obesity.

Read it. You won't be sorry.
