Editorial Reviews

Review

"In the latest installment of the Younger Next Year books, series coauthor Crowley and chiropractor James empower people with often-agonizing back pain. So instructive and descriptive are Crowley and James that everyone curious about the mechanics of the back and everyone with back pain will benefit from their easy-to-understand guide to preventing and treating that common ailment." —Booklist

“This is a great book for back pain sufferers and their caregivers alike. The guidance offered will allow the afflicted to get on a path to recovery and wellness—to get back to what they love to do.”
—Todd J. Albert, MD, Surgeon in Chief and Medical Director, Hospital for Special Surgery

About the Author

Chris Crowley, a former litigator (Davis Polk & Wardwell), is the coauthor, with Henry S. Lodge, of the Younger Next Year books, and the coauthor, with Jen Sacheck, PhD, of Thinner This Year. Though in his eighties, he fully lives the life, skiing black diamonds and routinely doing thirty-mile bike rides. He and his wife live in Connecticut and New York City.

Jeremy James, DC, CSCS, is Director of the Aspen Club Back Institute. He became a Doctor of Chiropractic (instead of going into traditional medicine like almost everyone else in his family) because of his own struggles with sports-induced back pain as a young athlete, and developed his behavioral/whole body method while working with serious athletes for over a decade. He lives with his wife and son in Aspen, Colorado.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love YNY Series: Aging Happens
By William C. Trench on December 5, 2018
I read Younger Next Year when it was first published. Recommended it to all who over-exercise, believe it or not. While far from perfect in sticking with its recommendations, being active in sport and recreation has always played a role in my life. And, I have done it all ... horseback riding, running, tennis, golf, riding a back, playing soccer and basketball with my sons ... all fun, but hurting.

At 64, finding golf injuries frustrating, it was time to renew my convictions. Here comes the Back Book! How timely! Over the years, when your back hurts, you will try anything. Tapes, Pilates, braces, pills, exercises ... on and on. All have worked to a varying degrees. At this stage of life, other than select supplements, I don't like medicines of any kind. Had maybe one flu shot. My immunity is the best of my life, probably because I ended air travel. Never understood cholesterol-reducing drugs. Never taken them. They made no sense. When I asked how they worked, no doc pushed them. Thank goodness. Cholesterol, you know, can be good for the brain.

However, aerobic exercise, diet, and enjoying sport all make sense. There's the reality of arthritis. Strangely, my hip, where it first began, has improved since 50. I don't really know why. Probably less golf. Golf puts serious hurt on a body. Many parts. None are more concerning than the back.

YNY is fantastic. I re-started, with some modified Sprint 8 interval training workouts, and added the Back Book. What a delightful discussion. The authors are masters of brevity. Chris's humor is still there. Because I don't want to spend my life exercising ... the Back Book fits the bill. An easy read. Makes sense.

For all of my life, I have been a sloucher. My mother's voice rings in my ears. Stand up straight. When I do the dishes nightly, I always wondered why my back hurt. Guess what? I slouch. Use my spine. For no other reason, buy this book for the grape fruit. Yes, when you read it, you will get it. This has changed my life. I now know where neutral is. Someday it will become a habit because of these authors. Thank you, guys.
