Independent musicians in 2012 find themselves more confused than ever before, and finding good information can be a challenge. "Your Band Is A Virus - Expanded Edition" suggests a neutral and clear perspective, rather than feeding any industry illusions of jumping from the jamspace to Rolling Stone.
Advocating presenting the right product to the world, timing a release properly, promoting to music blogs and publications with a personal touch, outsourcing and freelancing your way to success, building a virtual army of allies, bloggers and writers, embracing the free music model, thinking outside the box, and building on every achievement, "Your Band Is A Virus" presents a very human, actionable and rational approach to music marketing coming from James Moore, an independent promoter who has tried all the tactics himself, and writes in a humorous and conversational tone.
"The intention of the book is to completely wipe out many of the misconceptions musicians have when it comes to music marketing. I'm a music promoter without a fancy title. This book wasn't written by an entertainment lawyer or a label CEO. I'm DIY and I write about what has worked for me over the last few years, and many of the ideas I'm happy to say just don't get talked about anywhere else. It's all straight talk and actionable advice, and I feel it's the most valuable music promotion book available today. Musicians have the most trouble and confusion about generating press, so that's what I mainly focus on. There's a lot of misinformation and fantasy realities out there, so the intention is to inspire and bring some clarity to artists" says Moore.
This special expanded edition also includes an industry insiders interview series featuring legendary producer Stuart Epps (Led Zeppelin, Elton John), HIP Video Promo CEO Andy Gesner, Justin Wayne of the Justin Wayne show, Katie O'Halloran of Ithinkiloveit.com and Crystal Lee of Vandala Concepts Magazine.

Moore makes it very clear that he's not writing for the bedroom hobbyists and casual jammers out there. Your Band Is A Virus - Expanded Edition is meant to get people talking about and ultimately buying your product. Likewise, the book does not waste space with the decades-old paradigm of cozying up to record labels and A&R channels; his main focus is how independent musicians can harness the opportunities made possible by the Internet -- often in ways other than the "official channels".
Sure, there's plenty of general breezy advice along the lines of "get behind the scenes" and "get people talking", but the real wealth of the book is in the specific examples and links that Moore provides to kickstart your online media presence. He doesn't simply explain concepts like "social media" and "guerilla marketing", he gives real-world examples and alternatives that you can actually use. He doesn't gloss over SEO, he gives you actual tag markup to use on your site.
Moore won me over by not just admitting but actively encouraging the use of torrents to spread "pirate" copies of your music. It's this kind of forward-thinking that separates cutting-edge promotion from tired rehashes of marketing tips from bygone pre-digital days. There are good near-timeless tips on writing press releases and developing personal connections, but also by-the-numbers guides to get you to iTunes via CDBaby, and which of the video sharing sites are the most useful.
Downsides? Moore knows that delivering the message requires telling you what he's going to say, saying it, and then telling you what he's said. So there's quite a bit of repetition, and some might argue that the book could have been half the length by boiling it down to its core messages. On the other hand, it may be the second or third mention of an idea that really drives the point home -- for example, a reader who is still dubious about offering music for free during Chapter 5 might find themselves seeing the prospect in a different light when the topic comes up in the context of Crowd Funding.
I'll say it again, Your Band Is A Virus - Expanded Edition is a guide to Right Now, not two years ago or two years from now. Therefore, some of the most specific "how to" elements may need a little revision as new or re-tooled features pop up. But for the most part, all of the information in the book will be extremely valuable as long as there's artists who want to promote themselves -- in fact, you could very well launch your own full-featured music PR firm with little more than this book (and a handful of artists, of course).

I was looking for a book that would help me understand what marketing options are available for an independent artist. I am a singer/songwriter just starting out, a bit of a chocolate tea pot yet I have found it easy to understand and motivating.
Lots of ideas to put an action plan in place, then you got to work your socks off!
Good luck reaching for your star where anything is possible on planet Earth, a bit of research and knowledge goes a long way so happy reading!
