Inspiring and uplifting!

I am new to Joel Osteen. I had seen his photo and heard of him, but this is my first exposure to any of his material. I listened to the audio version of this book, which I got from the library, and found it very motivating and practical. I bought my own copy so I can listen to it periodically whenever I need a boost.

I must admit that I have trouble understanding people (such as a few of the negative reviewers) who have a problem seeing God as a benevolent Father who wants to bless us with good things! Jesus often referred to God's loving generosity, and He told us to "Ask and you shall receive." He also told us that as a person thinks, so shall they be.

Even in the Old Testament God promises: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 NIV.

Of course I agree that our focus should not be ONLY on material success, wealth or possessions, but there is nothing wrong with having these as long as one keeps a balance and keeps God and spirituality as a priority. Furthermore, these principles, which have been espoused by many people, including Dr. Norman Vincent Peale ("The Power of Positive Thinking") really DO work! I can personally attest to that. Most of my goals and dreams have come to pass, with God's help, and with the ones that didn't, God gave me something better. God also often answers our prayers in a way we don't expect...which is always better than our own limited human thinking, which is why you need to keep an open mind and heart when praying for something.

I think a lot of times people resent being told that God wants them to have fruitful, abundant lives b/c perhaps they are too lazy to put forth the effort involved. God will help us, but we have to help ourselves. So it's easier to just say that "God wants me to be poor/sick/unsuccessful, etc." These same people might be jealous that someone like Joel Osteen is living a meaningful, useful and successful life. Get over it! I find that people like Joel Osteen and other motivational/ inspirational speakers are just what I need sometimes to get me moving towards my goals...always on the condition that it is God's will for my life and good for me. If not, I have faith that God will give me something even better!

Spiritual and motivational book. I purchased this book while soul searching. I was at crossroads in my life, personal and professional and trying to become a better person. I knew I needed help. My world has turned right side up and it keeps getting better. He's a great motivational speaker and he can hit home on some of your weaknesses. I am Christian, nondenominational, if that matters to reviewers. I have purchased this book for 3 others because it has been so helpful. My husband borrowed my book and he enjoys listening too. This is a book I have listened to more than once and I usually don't listen to books more than once (I bought the audio cds).

Feel good crap. I bought five copies for my friends, then became disillusioned by the reality that Jesus never called you to be rich. He called you to be godly, and to be persecuted, and to crucify your flesh. Osteen is a hack and a charalatan who travels on a private jet and spends his days writing lies about how to enter the kingdom of God. He cherry picks scripture like a champ, creating a false image of Jesus and His father. I'm sorry I bought this wonderful-sounding but truly awful collection of rubbish. If you have itching ears then this is your guy. If you want to hear the truth then read TL Osborne, Hudson Taylor, and George Mueller.

Joel Osteen's book, Your Best Life Now, is truly one of the best motivational books I've ever read! When he replaced his father, John Osteen, as the principal pastor of the Lakewood Church, which is in Houston, TX, he was kind of "backed" into it! You see, his father died of a heart attack, and Joel's mother had no idea of who to ask to be the speaker at the next Sunday's service. So, in desperation, she asked Joel if he could do it. Joel had great fears of doing that, because he had never done anything like that before! As a matter of fact, his only role in the church was "behind the scenes," in that he was involved only in the TV production for his father's program. Still, Joel accepted his mother's request.

However, much of the media predicted complete failure for him! Yet, he greatly succeeded in his efforts, and has become one of the greatest motivational speakers known to mankind!

I bought this book as a gift for my daughter, who is struggling with a painful illness. Unfortunately, she's too sick to read it... too sick to read anything. I still have the book, and I will eventually read it, but at the moment it's on my coffee table begging for attention. I did review the Table of Contents, and it looks like a positive reading experience. I saw Joel Osteen speak on a newsy video clip, and he seems to be a sensible but positive preacher. I think it's important for people to try to maintain a positive outlook, while coping with life's many struggles. I'm sure this book takes the positive approach to a variety of life's issues, and it's worth reading, and therefore buying.
