About the Author

Award-winning photographer David Ellwand was born in Liverpool, England, in 1966. For his eighteenth birthday, Mr. Ellwand received a gift that would change his life: a camera. He soon turned his passion for photography into a career and found himself working steadily on a variety of projects. In 1995, Mr. Ellwand released his first book for children, The Big Book of Babies, and followed it up with Emma's Elephant, both from Ragged Bears Publishers. For his next project, he used digital art for Fairie-ality (Candlewick), which garnered him critical acclaim and several awards. Afterwards, Mr. Ellwand returned to his original love—photography—and collaborated on several projects, including the enormously successful Amazing Baby series (Silver Dolphin). For his work, Mr. Ellwand has received numerous awards, including the coveted Booktrust Best Baby Book Award.

The concept, photography, and execution of this book (and the other David Ellwand books) is fantastic. My daughter loves these books.

However, I'm incredulous at the idea that you simply throw the entire book away and get another one, when all that really needs to be replaced is three small watch batteries. This is one of the most wasteful concepts I have ever seen. It creates unnecessary landfill and sets a terrible example for children. How does this teach them to be responsible in an age of dwindling resources?

I just spent the last hour with a set of needlenose pliers extracting the battery. It can be done, but the "dinger" has been purposefully designed so that it destroys the switch that makes it play if you attempt to replace the batteries. I think I've been able to salvage this one, but most will probably not be so patient as I was.

Why can't the batteries be replaced? Why can't the "dinger" be replaced? Shame on the publisher for putting out such a wasteful product.

The battery died very quickly (within a couple of weeks) on this book. Very disappointing for my boys. They still love the book but get frustrated trying to get the tune to play. There have been a couple of temper tantrums over this!

My 2 year old son got this and the other two teddy bear books by David Ellwand for Christmas last year. At first they were just another set of books to him and he preferred Goodnight Moon before bedtime. Now he grabs all three these from his shelf and we read all of them. This book in particular is his favorite thus we have worn out the batteries. Despite what the back cover says, you can replace them if cut open the speaker from it's backside. Unfortunately, given the price of the batteries and the effort to replace them, just buy another book.

Stopped working after 1 month. Ridiculous! there's no way to change the battery. Too bad because the illustrations are adorable cute.

This book very quickly became my 13-month old daughter's favorite! As with the other reviewers, the batteries were depleted very quickly (barely over a month). Needless to say, I was very disappointed with this ~ so much so that I wrote to the publisher. I received a very prompt message from the publisher thanking me for voicing my concern and apologizing for my frustration. He explained that, because they are non-replaceable, the batteries are long-lasting and meant to work for over 2,000 pushes. They sent me a new book free of charge within days. Because of this, I am giving it 5 stars despite the battery issue.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat is another in the series of Teddy Bear Sing-Along books and is a hit with my toddler great niece. She loves singing along with the recording which is included in the book. The pictures are charming and adorable. The book is sturdy and stain-proof and will last a child a long time. I would definitely purchase others in the Teddy Bear series of board books.

I ordered this used and of course the sound button was not functioning. USELESS purchase. What 2 year old wants to engage in this book without pressing the button and hearing the melody?

My son loves this book! He get's so sad when the music button wears out and dies after a few weeks only! I really wish it had a replaceable battery like other books of it's kind...
